Bobbi caught a glimpse of the car, saw the blood splashed across the front seats, and felt the nausea rise up. It should have been her who was working last night, not Harriet. It should have been her.

When a social worker is brutally murdered, Detectives Mike Nelson and Lena Overton are straight on the scene. But with a long list of potential suspects, can they work out who’s next before the killer strikes again?

It’s Lake Haven’s first murder in eighteen years, and the community is terrified – especially Bobbi, who was not only supposed to be on duty that night, but also has the same long dark hair as Harriet and drives the same blue car. Now Bobbi lives in constant fear that the murderer will be back for her

When Mike and Lena make a link to a missing-persons case and uncover a wide-spread grudge against social services, they know they’re close to uncovering the killer – but can they connect the last few dots and stop him before he takes another victim?

This is the sixth book in the North County series….. in general I do not like picking up books in the middle of a series, however this book did work as a standalone…. The only thing I probably missed out on is the connection with the characters…. not sure if Mike and Lena are in previous books (I’ll need to check out the blurbs of the previous books)…..

The book starts out with the murder of a woman who works for child protective services….. is it connected to a previous murder of a woman in the same line of work? Is it a case of mistaken identity? Is it her son? This book definitely did not have a shortage of suspects….. i’d have to say the author did a really good job of keeping things complicated, but simple….. The book went in a lot of different directions, yet I was never lost or confused…. additionally I found the ending very plausible and satisfying… even though I didn’t necessarily see it coming….

Where the book fell just a little short for me was with the characters…. I would’ve liked even more backstory when it came to Mike and Lena…. now this could be because this is the sixth book and I missed that in the previous books…. so that’s really on me…. I do have to say though as a plot driven police procedural (not always my favorite) this book definitely held my attention…..

Recommend to all fans of police procedurals with a very strong plot…

*** thank you so much to the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book ***

Sunday Swaps – Slouch Witch by Helen Harper

Slouch Witch

Slouch Witch by Helen Harper

Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses. It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.

And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

This was an ok read for me not brilliant but not terrible.

World building was also nice and easy for a non Witch book loving person like me.

This definitely pulled me out of my comfort zone, and I like to do that because sometimes you find an absolute gem of a book, unfortunately for me this wasn’t one however I did enjoy it.

Ivy and winter had some really good banter between each other and I love the fact that she was a lazy Witch, something that I would totally be.

I’m not sure if I would rush out to buy book 2 but I may get round to reading it in the future.

🌹Thank you to my lovely flower Berit for the recommendation, sorry i didn’t love it too.

She’s addicted to sex. He’s addicted to booze…the only way out is rock bottom.

No one would suspect shy Lily Calloway’s biggest secret. While everyone is dancing at college bars, Lily stays in the bathroom. To get laid. Her compulsion leads her to one-night stands, steamy hookups and events she shamefully regrets. The only person who knows her secret happens to have one of his own.

Loren Hale’s best friend is his bottle of bourbon. Lily comes at a close second. For three years, they’ve pretended to be in a real relationship, hiding their addictions from their families. They’ve mastered the art of concealing flasks and random guys that filter in and out of their apartment.

But as they sink beneath the weight of their addictions, they cling harder to their destructive relationship and wonder if a life together, for real, is better than a lie. Strangers and family begin to infiltrate their guarded lives, and with new challenges, they realize they may not just be addicted to alcohol and sex.

Their real vice may be each other.

addiction: to be physiologically or compulsively dependent upon something that is habit-forming…

This is the love story of Lily and Lo…. Friends since childhood… now romantically involved… both with demons they need to battle…Lo is a major alcoholic….. Lily is addicted to sex( an addiction I think we all find a little harder to understand than most)…..

Lily and Lo are both tragic and beautiful together…. they both seem to feed each other’s addiction…. not even sure who was more of a hot mess, but it sure was complicated….

Interestingly enough I’m not sure if I cared for either of the main characters…. the jury is still out on that…. however I really did grow to like the secondary characters…. Connor, Ryke, and Lily’s sister Rose…. Connor definitely added some comic relief he must be one of the most arrogant characters ever, but it really worked in this book! Even though I didn’t necessarily love Lily and Lo I sure wanted them to find that happily ever after…..

I think the author did a good job of portraying the ugly side of addiction…. As somebody who is very fortunate not to suffer from any type of addiction (with the exception perhaps of caffeine) my life and my kids lives have still been touched by it…. and it is hard for everybody involved…. this book I believe painted a realistic view of addiction it was messy…. additionally even though Lily was a sex addict there weren’t many if any overly graphic sex scenes….

I’d recommend this to fans of angsty romance💕 just know it ends on a cliffhanger…..

🌹 this book is part of #SundaySwap with my blog partner and I….. we recommend books to each other that are a little out of our comfort zone, curious to see what she thought of her witch book😇
