Spies Lies And Allies by Lisa Brown Roberts #BlogTour #Excerpt #Giveaway #BookReview @EntangledTeen @LBrownRoberts

Monday! Monday! And today I am excited to be on the Blog Tour for a fabulous YA contemporary filled with all kinds of adorableness!😻

EntTeen-01252-webbanner-ad1-STATIC(851x315)opt2 (1)

About Spies, Lies, and Allies:

Summers are supposed to be fun, right? Not mine. I’ve got a job at my dad’s company, which is sponsoring a college scholarship competition. I just found out that, in addition to my job assisting the competing interns, I’m supposed to vote for the winner. Totally not what I signed up for.

There’s a crazy guy running the competition like it’s an episode of Survivor. Then there’s Carlos, who is, well, very distracting –– in a good way. But I can’t even think about him that way because Crazy Guy says any fraternizing on the job means instant disqualification for the intern involved.

As if that’s not enough, an anonymous weirdo with insider intel is trying to sabotage my dad’s company on social media…and I’m afraid it’s working.

Much as I’d love to quit, I can’t. Kristoffs Never Quit is our family motto. I just hope there’s more than one survivor by the end of this summer.

Excerpt from Spies, Lies, and Allies:

“Let’s see where helping me on my project falls on this list.” Carlos picks up a pen and clicks it, eyeing me from underneath ridiculously long lashes.

Cautiously, I take a tiny step toward his desk so I can read the list.

“Number three.” I point to the napkin. “Teamwork.”

He nods and underlines the word. I notice he’s added numbers six through ten. Nothing is written next to those numbers, except for ten, next to which he’s drawn a smiley face.

“What’s that for?” I point to the smiley face. He leans back in his desk chair and grins up at me.

“Not sure yet.”

My heart throbs in my chest and my imagination is off and running, fantasizing about number ten.

Carlos points to number five: nicknames. “I think this is where we left off at lunch.” He clicks his pen repeatedly and I resist the urge to snatch it out of his hand. “I’d prefer not to be nicknamed for a pasta, but I gave you a cereal nickname, so…” He shrugs but keeps his eyes on mine.

“I…pasta…what?” He’s not making sense.

He bites his bottom lip, and I have no trouble picturing what will make me “smiley face” if we ever make it to number ten. Also, I’m pretty sure he’s a mind reader because his gaze drifts down to my lips, then back up to my eyes.

“The Manicotti. Who is it?” He glances across the room. “Elijah? He can be sort of cheesy.”

My mind analyzes his words, sliding them around like one of those puzzles where you have to move a string through twisted metal. And then it clicks.

“You read my notebook! You’re the one who—” Panic zings through me as I remember what I wrote about him, Carlos is trouble, and his editorial comment, True. Is Carlos adorable?

Apparently I’m not the only spy around here.

“Why’d you pick this desk?” I’m desperate to change the subject.

“I like the view.”

“But it’s better by the windows.”

“Depends on which view we’re talking about.” He gives me a cryptic smile, one that makes my stomach dip. “Anyway, I saved your notebook. You’re lucky no one else read your notes.”

Mortified and defiant, I cross my arms over my chest. “You didn’t have to read it. You could’ve just returned it.”

“I was just checking to make sure you’d listed all of Mr. Mantoni’s rules.”

“Uh huh.”

Across the room, Elijah stands up and stretches. He glances at us, an amused smirk twisting his lips like he knows something I don’t.

Carlos writes on the napkin again. Number six: healthy disagreement.

“You’re kidding, right?”

His responding grin packs more heat than it should.

“I think we’ve gone off track.” I’m proud of how calm I sound, even though my nerve endings are exploding like firecrackers.

4.25 Totally Adorable Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.25

I’ve read quite a few books this week that were dark and had very unlikable characters, so I needed a pallet cleanser and this was perfect… fun, filled with lovely characters, a positive message, romance, and friendship…. nothing makes me smile quite like a good contemporary YA even though I am no longer part of that target audience… nor have I been for a very long long time…. but I am still young at heart!

Laurel knows the only way she will get to see her workaholic father this summer is to intern at his company… The company is hosting a scholarship competition for the interns this summer, so Laurel’s father decides that she can assist the interns…. Laurel and her dad have a good relationship…. dad is just a workaholic and not around as much as Laurel would like…. it was lovely to see positive Family relationships…. Laurel got along well with both her parents and her older sister…. Laurel also had a fabulous BFF named Lexi…. so this book checked off two boxes for me, when it comes to YA books… positive female relationships and good parenting…. but those weren’t the only boxes this book checked off….

Laurel was a smart girl with a bit of a nerdy side…. she was very into science fiction/fantasy and there were a lot of Star Wars references in this book…. I loved how the relationship between all the interns evolved throughout the summer… I especially loved the friendship between Laurel and Trisha, it was wonderful that two people that appeared so different had so much in common…. I also adored the romance between Laurel and Carlos…. Carlos was such a great guy, but what I like even more was that he was not perfect…. and he did something towards the very end of this book that was just so sweet….

So we have the adorable romance and the beautiful friendships, but we also got a bit of a mystery…. someone was trying to sabotage the company on Twitter… so the interns got all Scooby Doo on us and solve the mystery…. although there was no mystery machine?

Absolutely recommend this to people of all ages when you are in the mood for a fun charming Red… and if you are a parent wondering if this is appropriate or not, I’d say 12 and up, this was a pretty clean read…

*** thank you so much to the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book ***

PS: loved all laurels nicknames for people the Manicotti being my favorite! But I also enjoyed Chocolate Eyes and Vader…

Have a lovely day! Berit 💛

Review

3.75 Dysfunctional Stars 🌟🌟🌟.75

Well, this is the week of unlikable characters…. another book filled with people I would not want to spend the day with or probably even an hour with, but somehow I found them quite compelling… and what I have learned this week from this book and another I read that was slightly similar… is if you cannot afford to live in a house and they are happy to give it to you… something is wrong! So yes if things are too good to be true, they probably are….

Connor needs to find a new place to live, and quickly…. so when a lovely bungalow in an elite neighborhood becomes available, he cannot believe how lucky he is to have snapped it up…. Connor is a therapist and intends on seeing his patients in the perfect office in his new home…. and everything is perfect until his first patient arrives and the neighbor kid starts jumping on his trampoline and creating quite the ruckus, causing that session to end prematurely…. turns out the neighbor kid is a teenager with some serious issues, most of them loud…. also turns out that one of his ex patients with a grudge is now one of his new neighbors… coincidence?

Everyone in this book was a serious hot mess…. they all needed some serious therapy and not from Connor…. not even sure how I would classify this book, perhaps as a family drama with a few twists… admittedly it took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did I was hooked…. really wanted to figure out what made these people tick…. and why was everyone so hostile towards one another….

I do recognize this book will not be for everybody… there is a very dark undercurrent to it…. it really shows the ugly side of humanity, and the consequences of that…. if you are looking for an uplifting feel good book, this is not your book… but if you are in the mood for a compelling read with some pretty gritty characters, I’d recommend….

*** thank you too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this book ***

PS: this really has nothing to do with the book, but it was something that bothered me for some unknown reason… The author referred to a few things as being North American, such as a North American facial expression…. I live about two hours away from the border between the US and Mexico, and I can tell you they’re probably very few facial expressions we share…. I almost felt as though Mexico was forgot to be part of North America…. when some of these statements were made…. but this could just be because I am someone in America who lives close to Mexico and knows there is a pretty big difference….. no biggie it was just something I noticed and really have never heard before….🇺🇸🇲🇽🇨🇦

I Have Lost My Way by Gayle Forman @gayleforman #BookReview

Happy Saturday all! Today I am bringing you my review of the latest book from Gayle Forman… as in all her books, this book is filled with wonderful characters and all the feels!😍

I Have Lost My Way

I Have Lost My Way by Gayle Forman

Synopsis

Around the time that Freya loses her voice while recording her debut album, Harun is making plans to run away from everyone he has ever loved, and Nathaniel is arriving in New York City with a backpack, a desperate plan, and nothing left to lose. When a fateful accident draws these three strangers together, their secrets start to unravel as they begin to understand that the way out of their own loss might just lie in helping the others out of theirs.

Review

4 CharacterDriven Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was a book filled with amazing characters….Freya meets Nathaniel after falling off a bridge and landing on top of him…Harun is a witness to the fall and so the friendship between the three of them begins… I realize this seems like an unlikely way to meet, but it really worked in this book….

Freya is an emerging singer who has lost her voice….Harun is gay and more than just a little afraid to come out to his parents…. Nathaniel is just a lost boy who will break your heart…. I really was drawn to each of these characters, I found them all so raw and real…. I also found the bond and friendship they formed in such a short time quite realistic… given the circumstances and the fact that they all really needed one another….

The only problem I had with this book was it was very short…. it was almost like a tease… you are given these amazing characters, who are very well-developed, and then that was it…. I just felt as though there was so much to be discussed and so much room for growth, and yet we didn’t get to see that part…. however I do have to say I do like how one of the situations was resolved, it was very sweet…. and on the audiobook you get an additional treat of singing💕

Strongly recommend to fans of books with some pretty darn amazing characters!

Have a lovely weekend! Berit 💛

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman #FlashbackFriday #BookReview @GailHoneyman

Happy Friday! Bringing you one of my favorite books of 2017, if you have not read this gem of a book yet I strongly encourage you to do so!😍

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

5 spectacular Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

Review

What a remarkable book about an extremely interesting character Eleanor…. I would strongly recommend this book to anybody that likes a character driven story, this book was just filled with remarkable characters that were so extremely well developed…. Eleanor, motivated by an extremely one sided crush decides she’s going to improve herself… along the way she makes a friend in Raymond, he and my opinion is the true hero of the story, without him Eleanor would not have grown or made herself a better person, as much as she did…. it is really just a simple story of how a single person and a single act of kindness, can impact your life so much for the better…..

With Kindness,

Berit

Russell DayAbout Russell Day:

Russell Day was born in 1966 and grew up in Harlesden, NW10 – a geographic region searching for an alibi. From an early age it was clear the only things he cared about were motorcycles, tattoos and writing. At a later stage he added family life to his list of interests and now lives with his wife and two children. He’s still in London, but has moved south of the river for the milder climate.

Although he only writes crime fiction Russ doesn’t consider his work restricted. ‘As long as there have been people there has been crime, as long as there are people there will be crime.’ That attitude leaves a lot of scope for settings and characters. One of the first short stories he had published, The Second Rat and the Automatic Nun, was a double-cross story set in a world where the church had taken over policing. In his first novel, Needle Song, an amateur detective employs logic, psychology and a loaded pack of tarot cards to investigate a death.

Russ often tells people he seldom smiles due to nerve damage, sustained when his jaw was broken. In fact, this is a total fabrication and his family will tell you he’s has always been a miserable bastard.

4.25 Fun Foodie Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.25

This was a fun read that made me quite a bit hungry at times…. The book had a little bit of a lot of things I like humor, wonderful characters, food, reality television, did I mention food? This really was the story of Katie finding her way and herself….

Katie has always wanted to be a chef, she went to chef school, and opened her own restaurant… but as I’m sure most of you no the restaurant business is tough…. so when Katie finds it necessary to close her dream restaurant she ends up taking a job at a care facility as a cook… then she sees a casting call for a reality television show called Master Chef…. The winner gets to work with a very famous yet temperamental chef Jean-Michel… now I have never had the desire to be a chef… in fact my idea of cooking is putting something in the microwave and heating it up…. however this Jean-Michel character has only made me realize I’d never want to work in his kitchen… really what a complete jerk!

Katie was an extremely likable and relatable character… flaws and all… yes she was a bit selfish when it came to her father’s needs, but as children even as adult children we all probably are a little bit…. I really loved Katie’s relationship with the elderly Martha… Martha was such a spunky older lady with such fabulous advice we really all need a Martha in our lives…. Alice Katie‘s BFF was also a really likable an interesting character, I wouldn’t mind a book about her…. then we have Ben Katie‘s ex boyfriend who also ended up being her competition in the reality show…. Ben seemed like a nice enough guy, and they had a few moments that were cute… but he did have a girlfriend…. I guess I would’ve maybe liked some of their history? I really didn’t always understand the attraction… but that is my only minor complaint about this book… otherwise it was a pleasure to read… I loved seeing all the growth in Katie throughout this book….

Strongly recommend to anybody who loves fabulous characters, a pleasant plot, and food….

*** thank you too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this wonderful book ***

Connie is tired of solving one family crisis after another – usually involving her unruly grandchildren – while her husband Roger spends all day at his beloved golf course. Surely it must be time for her to shake off her apron and start living again?

So Connie packs a bag, gets in her little green car and drives off…

As Connie journeys from England to Scotland on an unexpected adventure, she finally begins to rediscover herself. And she starts to wonder, will she ever be ready to return home? Or will this summer change her life forever?

The Runaway Wife is an inspiring and joyously uplifting novel about being true to yourself. If you loved The Kicking the Bucket List and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry this book is for you.

4.5 delightful Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

What a fun journey this was literally and figuratively…. Connie is tired of being took for granted… so she packs up her well loved adorable car named Kermit and hits the road….. I really need to tack up a map of the UK somewhere in my house, I read so many books that take place there and I have no idea where anything is… I kept googling places because they all seem so lovely… I am taking a trip there sometime soon, But in the meantime I will visit through books….

Connie was so likable and so real… she was all of us…. some of the characters she met along her trip were so quirky and a few situations were a little over-the-top, but that made this even more fun…. Connie added a little sunshine to everybody‘s life she met along this trip…. and she took away a little knowledge from everybody herself….

I also really love the emails between Connie and her children back home… at first her kids were super concerned…. like who’s going to babysit their kids and how is poor dad going to cope with things such as vacuuming…. connie’s answers back were perfection…. she just told them that she was having an amazing journey and she’d be back soon enough….

So does Connie returned to her family…. do things change? Do they now appreciate their lovely mother? You really need to read this book and find out! Mom if you are reading this review, you would love this book!

Absolutely recommend to anybody who has ever felt undervalued and overwhelmed… filled with fabulous quirky characters, laugh out loud moments, and some teaching moments as well….

*** thank you so much too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this lovely book ***

PS: looks like my mom is going to have a Bookouture Mother’s Day 🤫 berit 💛
