The High Season

The High Season by Judy Blundell

4.25 Beachy Stars ūüĆüūüĆüūüĆüūüĆü.25

In a beach town overrun with vacationers and newly colonized by socialites, one woman goes to extreme lengths when the life she loves is upended. The ultimate summer read, this novel of money, class, and family is perfect for fans of Meg Wolitzer, Curtis Sittenfeld, and Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s¬†The Nest.

No matter what the world throws her way, at least Ruthie Beamish has¬†the house. Lovingly renovated, located by the sea in a quiet village two ferry rides from the glitzier Hamptons, the house is Ruthie’s nest egg–the retirement account shared with her ex-husband, Mike, and the college fund for their teenage daughter, Jem. The catch? To afford the house, Ruthie must let it go during the best part of the year.

It’s Memorial Day weekend and Ruthie has packed up their belongings for what Jem calls “the summer bummer” the family’s annual exodus to make way for renters. This year, the Hamptons set has arrived. Adeline Clay is elegant, connected, and accompanied by a “gorgeous satellite” stepson.

The widow of a blue-chip artist, in a world defined by luxury and ease, Adeline demonstrates an uncanny ability to help herself to Ruthie’s life. Is Adeline just being her fabulous self, or is she out to take what she wants?

When an eccentric billionaire, his wayward daughter, a coterie of social climbers, and Ruthie’s old flame are thrown into the mix, the entire town finds itself on the verge of tumultuous change. But as Ruthie loses her grasp on her job, her home, and her family, she discovers a new talent for pushing back. By the end of one unhinged, unforgettable summer, nothing will be the same–least of all Ruthie.

This book was a beach vacation without the sandūüŹĖ it was definitely not a ‚Äúsummer bummer…‚Äú that‚Äôs how Jem referred to the fact that they had to move out of their house in the summer, in the high season….

This book was about the rich and the privileged… and a lovely village in the north fork of Long Island…. geography lesson (I did not know this before this book) the Hamptons are on the south fork of Long Island and this charming village was on the North Fork… A village filled with farmstands and charming museums… where the rich vacation in the summer…. sometimes it‚Äôs nice to read a book that allows you to escape reality… because some of the characters are not living in the same reality that you are… but don‚Äôt worry this is not a book about snobby rich people, in fact the most important characters in this book are not rich…

Ruthie, loved her! Now Ruthy really had a‚ÄĚ summer bummer…‚ÄĚ you know that saying ,‚ÄĚkick them when their down!‚ÄĚ? That was pretty much her summer, she could not catch a break… but she found out who her true friends were, and she grew a lot… Ruthie was such a likable and relatable character… she was a mother, she was a friend, and she knew what it was like to earn a dollar….Jem, Ruthie‚Äôs teenage daughter was also a very likable character… The author did a very good job with the teenage angst….

Absolutely recommend as a summer read whether you are on the beach or not…

Last Goodbye by Arlene Hunt #BlogBlitz #BookReview @arlenehunt @bookouture

Happy Tuesday all! Tuesdays are always busy days in the world of books!ūüďö

Today I am thrilled to be part of the blog blitz for the first book in what looks to be a fantastic series… thank you to Noelle for the invite and to Arlene Hunt for her fabulous dark words!ūüĖ§

Title: Last Goodbye   (previously titled THE SWEETHEART KILLER)

Author:  Arlene Hunt

You’re young. You’re in love. You’re in terrible danger …

A completely unputdownable thriller from Amazon chart bestseller Arlene Hunt.

‚ÄėThe woman‚Äôs body lay on the bed, hair fanned out in a golden halo, blue eyes open. On the table stood an unmistakable sign: a bouquet of bright yellow roses…‚Äô

On a freezing January morning, a young couple is found dead in their cottage in the quiet Dublin suburbs. When Detective Eli Quinn arrives at the scene his stomach drops. It’s the second double homicide in as many months where the killer has left a bunch of yellow roses.

Tucked between the thorns is a little card, with an image of a broken heart. There’s no doubt the killer is trying to send a message, but what do the flowers mean? And can Eli figure out the killer’s motive, before they strike again?

Utterly gripping, fast-paced and nail-bitingly tense, this serial killer thriller will keep you up reading all night. If you love Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Patricia Gibney, you won’t be able to put this down.

~My Review~

4 Shiny Young Stars ūüĆüūüĆüūüĆüūüĆü

This was a good start to this series, and I cannot wait to get to know Eli Quinn and Roxy Malloy better… Roxy is young (shiny and new) with all the ideals of somebody who doesn‚Äôt know better yet…. Eli was her perfect counterbalance, the old veteran… the old dog that did not want to learn new tricks…. kind of my way or the highway….

This book starts out with a gruesome murder scene…. there are some similarities between this case and another that is what brings Eli and Roxy together…. but are these cases related? We also get a narrative from a character who calls himself Wolf… always love when you get a peek into the killers mind… but is he the killer? So many twists and turns not sure how we got to the end, but we got there….

There were some wonderful secondary characters in this book… loved Cora the most, she was so me if I had to be a police officer… she added some comic relief in a pretty dark book, she also gave Roxy some things to think about… also a special S/O to Cucumber the cat… will absolutely read the next book in the series, excited to see this cast of characters grow…

Recommend two fans of mysteries and police procedurals, with a bit of a dark side…

*** thank you so much too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this brilliant book ***
