Happy Monday book people!
Excited to share with you today my review for this campy detective mystery, with a title I could not resist! I mean how could I not review a book when my blog name is based on the same song as the title???
Money in the bank and his dream girl on his arm – life was looking pretty sweet for Kirby Baxter.
Of course it couldn’t last. Where would the fun be in that? This is a sequel after all.
After solving the murder of a movie starlet the previous year, Kirby is doing his best to live down his burgeoning reputation as part-time Interpol agent and amateur sleuth.
Then reality TV comes knocking next door.
Million Dollar Madhouse is a reality TV show where a bunch of washed up celebrities are thrown together in a dilapidated mansion while their attempts to renovate the building are broadcast 24/7 for the viewers delight.
Kirby’s quiet town is thrown into chaos by the arrival of camera crews, remote control video drones and a cast of characters including disgraced actress Victoria Gorham, political shock-jock Bert Wayne and reality TV royalty Kassandra Kassabian.
When one of the cast members turns up dead the local police turn to the only celebrity detective in town for help and draft an unwilling Kirby into their investigation.
The first body is only the beginning of another rip-roaring adventure for Kirby Baxter and with Gustav his loyal driver/valet/bodyguard/gardener//chef/ass-kicker at his side, our hero plunges into the fray with his usual stunning displays of deductive reasoning and sheer bloody luck.
My Thoughts
Picture this… murder in the Big Brother House, imagine the ratings?!?!
This was a fun modern take on the classic detective story… and as a fan of the reality TV genre (don’t tell anyone though) I thought this was a refreshing update to the detective genre…
Dunkin Baxter is a consultant for Interpol… The why of this is a bit of a mystery, something exceptional happened in Liechtenstein, that we the reader are not privy to as of yet…. Duncan a retired comic book illustrator, professional nerd, and part time Detective is not happy to find out they will be filming “Mansion Madness“ a reality television show, next door to him… and after someone is killed in the house his intelligent, intuitive, and quirky detective services are required…. not an easy task with a house full of vapid suspicious characters, who just so happen to be B list (or possibly see list) celebrities….
This was definitely an entertaining Book that did not take itself too seriously…. I enjoyed all the characters immensely they were so well drawn, with my favorites being Duncan and his sidekick Gustav… seriously we all need a Gustaf in our lives! The mystery was fun and I really enjoyed watching Dunkin solve the case, but if I’m being honest the characters really stole the show for me in this one!
Recommend to those of you who enjoy detective story with a substantial dose of humor🔍

I can’t help but think that at one point video killed the radio star but these days you’d be lucky to stumble on a music video.
The book sounds cute though even if now I’m going to have that song stuck in my head. LOL
