The Nowhere Child by Christian White @StMartinsPress @MacmillanAudio #bookreview #audiobook

Happy Saturday bibliophiles!

Thrilled to share with you today my audiobook review for this intriguing thriller! This book was full of twists and turns, secrets and lies, and snakes!🐍

  • The Nowhere Child

  • A Novel
  • By: Christian White
  • Narrated by: Katherine Littrell
  • Length: 9 hrs and 39 mins
  • Unabridged Audiobook
  • Release date: 01-22-19

  • Publisher: Macmillan Audio

My Thoughts

A compelling thriller full of twists and turns, secrets and lies, and snakes!🐍 what would you do if you found out you weren’t who you thought you were your entire life? How would you react if you found out you weren’t Kim Australian photography teacher, but Sammy Kentuckian kidnap victim? This book starts with a BANG and maintains it’s intensity until the very end… A brilliantly crafted perfectly paced debut… BRAVO Christian White!

Kim is leading a relatively uneventful life in Australia…. she has a job she enjoys, a sister who loves her, and she is beginning to get it together after losing her mother to cancer…. then one day a strange American shows up with a picture… a picture of a two-year-old girl who he insists is her…. a two-year-old Sammy Who was kidnapped over 20 years ago from a small town in Kentucky, a two-year-old Sammy who happens to be the sister of the strange American Stew…. after a DNA test and confronting her stepfather, Kim decides to head to America to meet her birth family and to figure out how in the world she ended up in Australia? Kim was expecting some culture shock, but she could not begin to imagine how much culture shock she would be in for….

The book seamlessly weaves the past and present storylines together… it was truly fascinating watching Kim navigate her way through small town Kentucky, meeting her birth family, including her mother who is a snake handler in the Pentecostal church…. The past story was equally intriguing… learning about the family at the time of Sammy‘s disappearance, and trying to figure out the how and the who of it all…. as the layers of both past and present were peeled away the creepier and more intricate the deception got…. and the snakes, oh boy those creepy slithery slimy snakes! Yikes! There are parts of this book that still give me the heebie-jeebies!

An intense story that will satisfy your psychological thriller craving! A trope you may have read before, but with a shiny new unique brilliant twist! This is a thriller not to be missed! Absolutely recommend!

🎧🎧🎧 The narrator of this audiobook was Katherine Littrell and I have only two words for you… AUSTRALIAN ACCENT! She did a really good job, even her American male accents were well done… and I appreciated the fact that she did not even attempt to do a southern accent, sometimes that accent can be a bit over exaggerated… as always the audio narration breathed even more life into this already highly entertaining story, a definite must listen!

🎵🎵🎵 song running through my head… Australia makes me think of this song and having that Australian accent in my ear throughout this book really made me think of this song!

”Traveling in a fried-out combie

On a hippie trail, head full of zombie

I met a strange lady, she made me nervous

She took me in and gave me breakfast

And she said

Do you come from a land down under?

Where women glow and men plunder?

Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?

You better run, you better take cover

Buying bread from a man in Brussels

He was six-foot-four and full of muscles

I said, “do you speak-a my language?”

He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich

And he said

I come from a land down under

Where beer does flow and men chunder

Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?

You better run, you better take cover, yeah”

– Men at Work 1981

*** The other song I was contemplating was “Union of the Snake” by Duran Duran, I’m such an 80s girl!

*** A huge thank you to Macmillan Audio/Minotaur Books for my copies of this book ***

About the Book

Winner of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, The Nowhere Child is screenwriter Christian White’s internationally bestselling debut thriller of psychological suspense about a woman uncovering devastating secrets about her family—and her very identity…

Kimberly Leamy is a photography teacher in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-six years earlier, Sammy Went, a two-year old girl vanished from her home in Manson, Kentucky. An American accountant who contacts Kim is convinced she was that child, kidnapped just after her birthday. She cannot believe the woman who raised her, a loving social worker who died of cancer four years ago, crossed international lines to steal a toddler.

On April 3rd, 1990, Jack and Molly Went’s daughter Sammy disappeared from the inside their Kentucky home. Already estranged since the girl’s birth, the couple drifted further apart as time passed. Jack did his best to raise and protect his other daughter and son while Molly found solace in her faith. The Church of the Light Within, a

Pentecostal fundamentalist group who handle poisonous snakes as part of their worship, provided that faith. Without Sammy, the Wents eventually fell apart.

Now, with proof that she and Sammy are in fact the same person, Kim travels to America to reunite with a family she never knew she had. And to solve the mystery of her abduction—a mystery that will take her deep into the dark heart of religious fanaticism where she must fight for her life against those determined to save her soul…

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Berit☀️✨

Summoned to Thirteenth Grave by Darynda Jones @StMartinsPress @MacmillanAudio #bookreview #audiobook

Happy Friday book lovers!

Super excited to share with you today my review for one of my all-time favorite series that sadly is ending with this book! This is a must listen series with amazing narration! If you have not fallen in love with audiobooks yet this is a good place to start!🎧💕

Summoned to Thirteenth Grave

  • Charley Davidson, Book 13
  • By: Darynda Jones
  • Narrated by: Lorelei King
  • Length: 8 hrs and 39 mins
  • Unabridged Audiobook
  • Release date: 01-15-19
  • Language: English
  • Publisher: Macmillan Audio

My Thoughts

The PERFECT ending to a fantastic series!

Charley Davidson series done but never forgotten!

-T-shirt

WOW talk about going out with a bang! This really was the perfect cherry on top of this wonderful Charley Davidson sundae…. or probably more appropriate the whip on top of The coffee drink… this really was an exceptional series and I have enjoyed every single minute I have spent with these wonderful characters! I will miss them dearly and be looking forward to Beep’s spin off….

Charley has return to earth after being banished for 100 years… 100 years without hair product and caffeine does not a happy Charley make…. she also comes home to a hell dimension having been opened and demons snacking on the citizens of Albuquerque….. throw in a serial killer and a kidnapper and you’ve got a busy Charley…. what’s so wonderful about the series is even though there’s always a lot going on the main focus is on the characters and their relationships…. Charley’s romantic relationship with the smoldering Reyes… her brilliant friendship with Cookie, I don’t know about the rest of you but I’d love to go to lunch with these girls! And i absolutely cannot forget uncle Bob, Amber, Garrett, Artimus, angel, and so many more…. all the essential players are in this book and a lot of lingering questions are answered… and there are some definite surprises, very welcome surprises! If you are a fan of the series this is an absolute must! If you aren’t, do yourself a favor and pick up book one, I promise you will not be able to put it down until you get to book 13!

Goodbyes are never easy, but farewell Charley and gang, thanks for the memories you will be missed!

🎧🎧🎧 this entire series is narrated by Lorelei King and she does an amazing job of bringing Charley to life… I really could not imagine a better narrator for the series.. I really feel as though Lorelei and Darynda we’re on the same page when it came to the characters in this series. An absolute must listen!

🎵🎵🎵 Music running through my mind! There were a couple of songs that really went through my head during this one, but this is the one that stuck with me the most!

That’s great, it starts with an earthquake

Birds and snakes, and aeroplanes

And Lenny Bruce is not afraid

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn

World serves its own needs,

Don’t mis-serve your own needs

Speed it up a notch, speed, grunt, no, strength

The ladder starts to clatter

With a fear of height, down, height

Wire in a fire, represent the seven games

And a government for hire and a combat site

Left her, wasn’t coming in a hurry

With the Furies breathing down your neck

Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped

Look at that low plane, fine, then

Uh oh, overflow, population, common group

But it’ll do, save yourself, serve yourself

World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed

Tell me…

-It’s the End of the World As We Know It, and I Feel fine: REM 1987

About the Book

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plain for eternity – which is the appropriate amount of time to make a person starkraving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.
She’s missed Reyes and her daughter, Beep, but now that she’s back on earth, it’s time to put to rest burning questions that need answers. What happened to her mother? How did she really die? Who killed her? And are cupcakes or coffee the best medicine? It all comes to a head in an epic showdown between good and evil in this final smart and hilarious novel.

Have a wonderful day! Berit☀️✨

Whisper to Me by Sherrie Lowe @SherrieLowe2 @rararesources #bookreview #giveaway

Happy Thursday booklovers!

Delighted to share with you my review for this delightful book! A huge thanks to Rachel for my invitation and to Sherrie Lowe for her wonderful words!👻

Whisper to Me

A new wife and a vengeful ghost. Not a good mix.

Letitia – Tish – Stanyer makes husband Theo promise never to remarry if she dies and he complies just to pacify her. She isn’t going to die.

She does – and he does remarry. Tish isn’t happy. Her spirit cannot rest with another woman in her domain, sampling the delights of her husband. Theo belongs to her – Sheena will have to go.

My Thoughts

Hell have no fury like a dead woman scorn!

A haunting story of revenge and betrayal ….A cautionary tale, don’t make promises that you can’t keep… you never know when they might come back and HAUNT you!

Theo made a promise to his wife that he would never move on if she were to die, never expected her to actually die…. it is 10 years later and Theo has remarried after a whirlwind relationship, and Tisha is not having it! Yes, even from the grave Tisha is stopping Sheena from moving in on her man!

This was an unsettling little gem of a story! Full of good and evil and a ghost you will root for! An entertaining way to spend your afternoon… A book full of wonderful characters you will love to love and love to hate! Recommend!

Author Bio – I am a divorced mum of two adult sons and nana to three grandchildren, soon to be four. I’ve always had a notion to write but didn’t get round to it seriously until I became ill with M.E in 1995 when I was 40 and was too ill to continue my job as a learning support assistant in a mainstream high school. I was devastated to have to resign from my job but writing saved my sanity. My first attempt was a memoir, Shadow Across the Sun which covered the loss of my mum to breast cancer two days before my 13th birthday. When the rejections began to flow in from traditional publishers and agencies I joined a creative writing class and learned to write fiction. Whisper to Me is my 10th novel. I have a strong belief in the afterlife due to events following my mum’s death so most of my stories have some form of supernatural aspect to them.

The Lock by Andrew Barrett @andrewbarrett @BOTBSpublicity #bookreview

Happy hump day book lovers!

Excited to share with you today this gritty dark and brilliant book! A huge thank you to Sarah for my invitation to the tour and to Andrew Barrett for his gritty words!🔒

I’m Eddie Collins, a CSI. I was finishing up at a sudden death in an old house, waiting for the body snatchers to arrive, when I heard a noise from the cellar.

I had time to kill, so I went to investigate.

Turns out I wasn’t the only one with killing on his mind.

My Thoughts

An old house… a dead body… a key… a cellar… A spine tingling thriller with a horror vibe!

What a crazy, gritty, dark story this was… certain to make you fear the things that go bump in the night…. my friend Kenzie told me I’d needed to keep the lights on for this book, and she was SO right! Eddie Collins has sure gotten himself in one frightening pickle in this book!

This is a novella in the Eddie Collins CSI series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone… this book leaned a bit more towards the horror genre than I was expecting, but it still was Full of Eddy humor… Full of plenty of grit and Eddie sarcasm… and just enough forensic investigation to quench my CSI thirst!

A little gem in the Eddie Collins series that should not be missed! Recommend!

Life or Death by Chris Merritt @DrCJMerritt @bookouture #bookreview

Happy Wednesday all!

Busy day, on the blog today! Another fabulous book that I’m thrilled to share with you! Big thanks to Noelle for my invitation and Kris Meritt for the spectacular book!🚨

My Thoughts

A compulsive heart pounding installment in this fantastic police procedural series!

Zac is back and better than ever! This is the third book in the DI Zac Boateng series and in my humble opinion the best so far! Chris Merritt’s writing is so gripping he makes it impossible for you to put the book down! So make sure you have a few hours free before you pick this one up!

Zac is such a real and likable character and in this book my heart just broke for him…. five years ago Zac’s daughter Amelia was murdered, it is his mission to put all those responsible behind bars…. after a shoot out an informant appears to have the answers, but answers lead to more questions and more tragedy… this time not only is Zac seeking justice for his daughter, but he is also trying to rescue his son from a kidnapper…. this book had me shaking my head as I was trying to figure out what was going on and how so much can happen to such a nice guy… seriously how much can one man take before he snaps? I liked how significant a part Kat played in this book… I like that Zac has so much support both at home and on the job…

An intriguing story filled with twists and turns and plenty of action that will keep you on your toes! Recommend!

*** many thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

Never forget. Never forgive.

As a detective in the Metropolitan police, Zac is no stranger to murder cases, but this one is different. This is his daughter’s murder.

Years after Amelia died, Zac is still trying to trace the police office involved in his daughter’s death.

And whilst Zac is prepared to break every rule to find the man responsible, his young and ambitious deputy, Kat, is working on a high profile case of her own. But she knows Zac is keeping secrets from his team so she’s following his every move.

When one of Zac’s informants is killed, he knows he’s close to catching his man, but before he can act, he receives a call about his son which blows his world apart… And this time, he knows he’ll stop at nothing to save his family.

A gripping and addictive crime thriller for fans of Lee Child, Mark Billingham and Mark Dawson, Life or Death is an unputdownable thriller that will have you reading into the night.

Happy Wednesday bibliophiles!

Hope you’re having a fabulous hump day! Excited to share my review for this stunning book with you! A huge thank you to Emma for my invitation to the tour and to Sharon Thompson for her wonderful words!💚💛

My Thoughts

A hauntingly Beautiful story that will capture your heart and won’t let go!

1940s Ireland, not a good place to be a little different, to have a special gift… this was a well told tale that transported me to the past and to Ireland… it really brought to life how different things were in the 40s in Ireland in particular… this book was so authentic including the vernacular that it did take a while to get used to, but I ultimately truly appreciated….

Molly was such a sweet girl and she grew to be such a strong woman… my heart broke for her so many times… how cruel can people be, and how much can one girl take? Molly’s pain and wisdom popped off these pages completely enveloping me in the story… Sharon Thompson has her own special gift when it comes to storytelling….

An exquisitely told story that will tug at your heart strings and won’t let go! Recommend!

*** huge thanks to Bloodhound Books for my copy ***

One Fatal Mistake by Tom Hunt @TomHuntWriter @BerkleyPub #bookbestiesonefatalmistake #bookreview

Happy Tuesday bibliophiles!

Excited to share with you today my review for this fast paced thriller that will keep you glued to those pages! This was a group read with my Besties, and we were all riveted by this addictive read!💕

Available February 5, 2019

One Fatal Mistake by Tom Hunt

My Thoughts

An addictive fast paced read that will keep you glued to those pages!

How far would you go to protect your child? A tragic accident… a fatal mistake… a lie… a cover up… A BIG hot mess!

This book was packed full of nonstop action from first page to last… josh was involved in a tragic accident that led to the death of a man… in the process of covering it up Josh and his mom Karen run into Ross and Amber… Ross and Amber have just robbed a bank and are on the run… after Josh and Karen’s lives clash with Ross and Amber things go sideways, in a big way! Not going to go into the plot more, just know it is one wild and crazy ride….

This was such an entertaining read, but it also gave you some food for thought… Karen was a wonderful character and a definite loving mother, but… did she do the right thing? And in this situation is there a right thing? Would you help your child bury the body, literally or figuratively? I really have no idea what I would have done in Karen’s situation, and hopefully I will never need to know! Such a fun twisty story that definitely kept me engaged throughout! A book full of likable characters making some pretty bad decisions! It definitely showed you how one mistake, one lie, can lead to so much tragedy….

A nonstop thrilling thriller that will make your heart beat a little bit faster and make you need to catch your breath! Absolutely recommend!

🎵 Music running through my head! This song kept going through my head, because of Ross and Amber being on the run, and wanted dead or alive!

“It’s all the same, only the names will change

Everyday, it seems we’re wastin’ away

Another place where the faces are so cold

I drive all night just to get back home

I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride

I’m wanted dead or alive”

Second Chance at the Ranch by Maxine Morrey @Scribbler_Maxi @rararesources #bookreview #giveaway

Happy Monday and happy Martin Luther King day!

Thrilled to share my review for this book all about second chances and reinventing yourself! Big thanks to Rachel for my invitation to the tour, and to Maxine Morrey for her delightful story!💛

Second Chance At The Ranch

It’s never too late for a second chance at love in this uplifting and warm-hearted romance.

It’s never too late to find love…

When Juliet Scott falls for ruggedly handsome Pete while away travelling, she never imagines how different her life will be to that of her sister, successful and beautiful model Hero. Based on a cattle station in the vast Australian Outback, Juliet’s life is now simple, down-to earth and honest, and the perfect antidote to the chaotic celebrity lifestyle that Hero leads in the UK.

With her striking brunette hair, perfect posture, and mesmerising green eyes, it is no wonder Hero has come so far in such a superficial industry. But when tragedy strikes, Hero finds herself in the arms of her sister, recuperating from a terrible accident on the other side of the world.

With her modelling career in tatters, and her scars more than just skin deep, Juliet worries that Hero will hide behind the mask she wears forever. But does Australia have something, or someone, to offer that London never could?

My Thoughts

A sweet Romance about life’s second chances and reinventing yourself!

An engaging love story set in rural Australia… A book full of heart, hope, family, and lots and lots of angst… I can be a bit of a drama queen myself so I do love some good old fashion drama in my books!

Juliet and Hero are sisters and have always been close… however, Juliet is now living in Australia after falling in love with Pete… meanwhile hero is busy being a famous supermodel in the UK…. when tragedy strikes Hero finds herself heading to stay with her sister in Australia to heal her scars, inside and out… never did she ever think she would be drawn to such an isolated area or fall in love… but can Hero’s frozen heart be thawed?

I really liked Juliet and her romance with Pete was very very sweet! Hero on the other hand took a while for me to warm up to… she was very cold and distant and it was hard to believe she was the sister of Juliet…. but as different as the sisters were, they were really there for one another and the bond between them appeared to be unbreakable…. Hero and Nick’s love story was very… will they won’t they? Boy oh boy did both of these characters have some major issues and baggage…. a Romance filled with drama and frustration…

A wonderfully told romance filled with engaging characters and a beautiful setting! Recommend!

🎵 Music running through my mind, this song was running through my mind for obvious reasons! Hero is a great name, but I think if that was my name I’d feel a lot of responsibility to live up to its meaning!

… Where have all the good men gone

And where are all the gods?

Where’s the streetwise Hercules to fight the rising odds?

Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed?

Late at night I toss and I turn

And I dream of what I need

… I need a hero

As time went by, she continued to write, but ‘normal’ work often got in the way. She has written articles on a variety of subjects, as well as a local history book on Brighton. However, novels are her first love.

In August 2015, she won Harper Collins/Carina UK’s ‘Write Christmas’ competition with her first romantic comedy, ‘Winter’s Fairytale’.

Maxine lives on the south coast of England, and when not wrangling with words loves to read, sew and listen to podcasts. Being a fan of tea and cake, she can (should!) also be found doing something vaguely physical at the gym.

Her Pretty Bones by Carla Kovach @CKovachAuthor @bookouture #bookreview #audiobook

Happy Sunday bibliophiles!

Excited to share with you today my review for the third book in the brilliant Gina Hart series! Big thanks to Noelle for my invitation and to Carla Kovach for her wonderful story!🚨

My Thoughts

Redheads beware! You’re just the girl he’s looking for!

This was a gripping dark and twisted police procedural… The third book in the DI Gina Hart series and just as engaging as the previous two… even though I have read the previous books I do believe this can absolutely be read as a standalone…. but I’m going to bet that after you read this one you will want to go back and read the previous two!

A young girl’s body falls out of the back of a van, she is rushed to the hospital and her last words are, “help her!” A couple days later and a couple miles away a young girl’s body is found in a shallow grave… what these girls had in common their age, their emaciated bodies, and their hair color, red… Gina who just had an argument with her own daughter, is more determined than ever to solve this horrendous case….

I really liked how Gina and Company worked this case… I also liked how we got multiple perspectives including that of another young girl and potential next victim as well as a mother whose daughter was missing… I think the additional perspectives really added a layer of authenticity and terror to the story…. The mystery was full of the perfect amount of twists and turns and red herrings…. my one little niggle with the series is we don’t necessarily get to know Gina quite as much as I would like… we get a little glimpse, but I really would love to get to know this character better!

🎧🎧🎧 Audio Narration:

Tamsin Kennard made this British crime thriller even more British, that’s a good thing! I read the previous two books in the series so listening to the audio was a new experience and it definitely enriched the story for me…Tamsin has a beautiful English accent, much better than the one that runs through my head, she also added a little more of a feminine hand to Gina, and I really like that! She also did a really good job with the male voices, always a bonus! A audiobook narrator that adds another dimension to the story cannot be beat, if you are an audiobook person I’d pick this one up!

An engaging twisted crime thriller that will wake your inner detective! Recommended!

🎵 Music running through my mind! As a redhead that part of the story really stuck with me so the song I have paired with this book is…

Well brunettes are fine man

And blondes are fun

But when it comes to getting the dirty job done

I’ll take a red headed woman

A red headed woman

It takes a red headed woman

To get a dirty job done.

About the Book

THE UNPUTDOWNABLE NEW THRILLER FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE NEXT GIRL

She’s just the girl he’s looking for…

A young woman falls from a van speeding down a quiet road. Battered and bruised, she turns her head to the person who comes to her aid. ‘Help her’, she whispers before her eyes close.

Days later, the body of another young girl is found in a shallow grave just a few miles away. The similarities between the two girls are startling – same age, same frail body, same shocking red hair.

As the town fears there’s a serial killer living amongst them, Detective Gina Harte must put aside her own struggles at home, and catch the killer before he finds another perfect girl.

AN ABSOLUTELY HEART-STOPPING CRIME THRILLER FROM CARLA KOVACH – if you like Lisa Gardner, Robert Bryndza or Clare Mackintosh, Her Pretty Bones will have you hooked.
