We Keep the Dead Close **My Mom’s Thoughts**

Happy Monday all!

Hope y’all had a wonderful weekend! Excited to share with you today my mom’s Review for this true crime book that I really need to read!

My Thoughts

WE KEEP THE DEAD CLOSE by Becky Cooper is the well documented journey of an investigative reporter hoping to solve the 50 year old murder of a Harvard coed(which rather ironically evolves around the anthropology department).

In short passages the author recounts the in person, email, phone, and letter interviews she had with the victim’s associates not only sharing her discoveries and suspicions but filling in the victim’s life story.

Cooper also includes news articles, grand jury testimony, and interviews with policemen past and present working the case.

A surprising conclusion as to who murdered Jane Britton is finally reached with the help of modern day police work but this book takes the reader on a long, often meandering, but always fascinating trip to get there!

Glamour Dive into a “tour de force of investigative reporting” (Ron Chernow): a “searching, atmospheric and ultimately entrancing” (Patrick Radden Keefe) true crime narrative of an unsolved 1969 murder at Harvard and an “exhilarating and seductive” (Ariel Levy) narrative of obsession and love for a girl who dreamt of rising among men.

You have to remember, he reminded me, that Harvard is older than the U.S. government. You have to remember because Harvard doesn’t let you forget.

1969: the height of counterculture and the year universities would seek to curb the unruly spectacle of student protest; the winter that Harvard University would begin the tumultuous process of merging with Radcliffe, its all-female sister school; and the year that Jane Britton, an ambitious 23-year-old graduate student in Harvard’s Anthropology Department and daughter of Radcliffe Vice President J. Boyd Britton, would be found bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge, Massachusetts apartment.

Forty years later, Becky Cooper a curious undergrad, will hear the first whispers of the story. In the first telling the body was nameless. The story was this: a Harvard student had had an affair with her professor, and the professor had murdered her in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology because she’d threatened to talk about the affair. Though the rumor proves false, the story that unfolds, one that Cooper will follow for 10 years, is even more complex: a tale of gender inequality in academia, a ‘cowboy culture’ among empowered male elites, the silencing effect of institutions, and our compulsion to rewrite the stories of female victims.

We Keep the Dead Close is a memoir of mirrors, misogyny, and murder. It is at once a rumination on the violence and oppression that rules our revered institutions, a ghost story reflecting one young woman’s past onto another’s present, and a love story for a girl who was lost to history.

Have a wonderful day! XOXO Berit

The Lake House by Christi Barlow **Book Review** @rararesources @onemorechapter

Happy Monday all!

I just loved everything about this book! The setting, the characters, the storyline, it was the perfect little escape for today’s crazy times!

The Lakehouse

There’s a newcomer to the village of Heartcross and she’s never been more in need of a friend.  Ella is ready to start afresh ––and that could mean there’s love on the horizon in the form of the gorgeous Roman, the local water taxi driver. Every day Roman is there to ferry Ella to the restaurant on the other side of the lake and every night he makes sure she gets home safe. But Roman has secrets of his own…

Can the Love Heart Lane community offer Ella a chance of a new life? Or will the ghosts of her past catch up with her?

My Thoughts

What a fun feel good story this was. This was the fifth book in Christi Barlow‘s heartwarming Love Heart Lane series. each book in the series can definitely be read as a standalone, however there are appearances from characters in the previous books. Ella has reach rock-bottom. After the tragic death of her parents Ella met a man she thought was the love of her life who then turned out to be a complete scoundrel. Unwilling to give up Ella takes her friend Callie up on her offer to move to Heartcross. Heartcross is the definite cure. Not only does Ella have a new great job, make new wonderful friends, but she also meets the perfect man.

Loved this Story! The wonderful whimsical characters, the charming delightful setting, the friendship, the romance, the love. Ella was such a great character I loved how much spunk and trust she had even though she had gone through so much. Roman the love interest was probably too good to be true, but hey a girl can dream. Gorgeous, kind, smart, supportive, caring. The setting of the Lake House was perfection. A gorgeous manor with a magical history and a stunning setting, with the only way to get to it by boat. can’t wait for the next book in the series, I’m thinking it’s going to be Callie‘s turn.

Did My Love Life Shrink in the Wash? by Kristen Bailey **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy weekend all!

If you are looking for a fun feel good authentic story, then do I have the book for you!💕

My Thoughts

Fun. Genuine. Messy. Kristen Bailey has once again written an authentic, humorous, and heartfelt story. This is the third book in the fab Callaghan Sister series. you can absolutely read this as a standalone, but I guarantee once you meet these sisters you are going to want to go back and read the previous books in the series and then eagerly await the next books. This Beth’s story…Beth and her partner Will were living a bit of a party lifestyle. Raves, concerts, late nights, drinking, clubbing, lazy days spent sleeping, and loads of fun. BUT then after one night of too much fun *oopsie* Beth finds herself pregnant. This is the tale of how this fun loving couple deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the first year of new baby Joe’s life. The good. The bad. And the ugly of parenthood.

Loved this story! This is a realistic, humorous, emotional, sad an honest look at motherhood/fatherhood. no sugarcoating here, you get all the dirty details. Loved Beth and I loved her love for her little boy Joe. Will on the other hand truly frustrated me and I have to say Beth is a better person than I. Although I guess I do need to give him some grace…. or maybe I don’t. My favorite part of this book once again was the sisters and their amazing relationship and support for one another. this family is just so wonderful flaws and all their love definitely shines through. And dad really stepped up in a big way! I don’t know which sisters story I am more excited for next Lucy or Grace? I think Lucy‘s story is going to be a hoot and Grace’s story is going to be so sweet and emotional, just can’t wait!

About the Book

Sure, my bedroom gets lots of action. It’s called snoring.

Will and I didn’t have a clue what we were signing up for. It turns out that there’s loads we weren’t warned about:

1) You’ll spend more time spooning your child’s cuddly donkey than your own boyfriend.
2) Communication with your other half will be via post-it notes on the fridge, mainly telling him to buy more milk.
3) If you make the mistake of going to a nightclub you’ll nod off, drool, and be woken up by an angry bouncer.
4) In the middle of the night you’ll be begging Siri for advice on getting your baby to sleep. (Whale music doesn’t work.)
5) Sex is something that happened in another dimension.

But even if I feel like I’m waiting for my motherhood powers to come in the post, at least I’ve got Will. Our old life – festivals, sambuca shots, an actual sex life – might be a distant memory, but we can get through anything together, can’t we?

At least that’s what I thought until, one day, Will walked out on us… If I’m on my own (apart from Siri, obviously) can I do this whole parenting thing? Or I am destined to lose my sanity one sleepless night at a time?

A totally hilarious and absolutely relatable tale for anyone who has survived parenthood purely on microwave meals and wished for an IV drip of coffee to get them through! This uplifting page-turner will make your belly ache with laughter. Perfect for fans of Why Mummy Drinks, Sophie Ranald and Sophie Kinsella.

The Perfect Guest by Emma Rous **Book Review** @berkleypub

happy Friday y’all!

This was such a great thriller that I strongly encourage you to pick up! So very sinister and atmospheric!

My Thoughts

Delectably deceiving. deeply disturbing. Deliciously dark. Emma Rous once again stretched my mind with her mesmerizing storytelling, an atmospheric story with a Gothic vibe. 1988 Beth arrives at Raven Hall hopeful that this will be her new home. The family has a daughter Nina about the same age as her and Beth is eagerly cautious to befriend the girl. not long after arriving at the manor Beth begins to get some strange vibes, like why is it that Nina is not allowed to leave the property? 2019 struggling actress Sadie gets a part as a Party Guest at a mystery dinner. she cannot believe her luck a stunning dress, a gorgeous manner, interesting company. But it isn’t too long before Sadie figures out there is more to all of this than meets the eye. oh what a sinister tale Miss Rous has spun. Two women, one creepy manor, 30 years apart. what ties these two storylines together and what secrets is Raven Hall keeping?

I could not put this book down! I stayed up late into the night and finish this in one sitting. I was completely engrossed in this twisted mind bending tale. The story bounced between Sadie and Beth as well as now and then. I was equally engaged in both narratives. The story was extremely compelling even though the pacing was not always perfect. there was such a chilling sinister feel to the story, I was constantly waiting for something bad to happen. The ending was cleverly revealed one piece at a time keeping the tension throughout.

About the Book

The USA Today bestselling author of The Au Pair returns with another delicious, twisty novel—about a grand estate with many secrets, an orphan caught in a web of lies, and a young woman playing a sinister game.

1988. Beth Soames is fourteen years old when her aunt takes her to stay at Raven Hall, a rambling manor in the isolated East Anglian fens. The Averells, the family who lives there, are warm and welcoming, and Beth becomes fast friends with their daughter, Nina. At times, Beth even feels like she’s truly part of the family…until they ask her to help them with a harmless game—and nothing is ever the same.

2019. Sadie Langton is an actress struggling to make ends meet when she lands a well-paying gig to pretend to be a guest at a weekend party. She is sent a suitcase of clothing, a dossier outlining the role she is to play, and instructions. It’s strange, but she needs the money, and when she sees the stunning manor she’ll be staying at, she figures she’s got nothing to lose.

In person, Raven Hall is even grander than she’d imagined—even with damage from a fire decades before—but the walls seem to have eyes. As day turns to night, Sadie starts to feel that there’s something off about the glamorous guests who arrive, and as the party begins, it becomes chillingly apparent their unseen host is playing games with everyone…including her.

Escape back to wonderful Hedgehog Hollow with top 10 bestseller Jessica Redland for the perfect uplifting read full of love, hope and forgiveness.

My Thoughts

Charm, and forgiveness, and hedgehogs… oh my! This is the second book in Jessica Redland’s’s Hedgehog Hollow series. This book can certainly be read as a standalone, Jessica does a great job of catching you up with characters from the previous books. But I’m pretty certain after you have read this you’ll wish you’d read the first. The book picks up with Samantha recovering from being in a coma after being injured in a fire in the previous book. The hedgehog rescue is now officially open and their are no shortage of hedgehogs in need. even little baby hoglettes needing tended to. Lucky Samantha‘s boyfriend Josh is a vet and also shares a passion for these adorable creatures. there is a lot more to this book than hedgehogs. this is a heartwarming story filled with love, friendship, family, and forgiveness. seriously Samantha and Josh must be two of the most forgiving people ever. Both of them have some major family drama going on and the fact that they could be so forgiving was inspiring. I consider myself a pretty forgiving person, but I have to say some of these things going on were pretty unforgivable. probably why Samantha and Josh are so well-suited for one another. we are also introduced to a new character in the story Fizz, who I absolutely adored. this was just such a feel good Story. So much whimsy cuteness, and wonderful characters. I learned so much about hedgehogs which BTW we don’t have in the US(other than in zoos or as pets). and probably fortunately I found out I cannot have a hedgehog legally in the state of California, so no more additions to my zoo. it’s been a tough week and this really was a perfect book to restore my hope in humanity.

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C. M. Wagoner **Book Review** @berkleypub

Happy Tuesday all!

Happy birthday to this clever quirky story! This was such a fun read!🧙🏻‍♂️

My Thoughts

whimsical. Magical. Fantastical. C. M. Waggoner completely pulled me into this enchanting story with her quirky and unique writing style. before you start this book I think it is important that you are aware of the fact that the dialogue in the story is highly original. It is almost as if they are speaking a different language but they aren’t. At first this threw me off a little but by the end of the book I was completely acclimated to the style. I have to think The colorful language drew me into this world even more. The colorful language also was perfectly suited for our antiheroine Delly. Delly is a sharp, spunky, spirited fire witch who is in need of funds fast. When Delly sees an ad for a job as a bodyguard of a rich lady in need of being guarded before her wedding she is eager to apply. How hard can this be? Delly is certain the lady is exaggerating her peril. But Delly soon finds out the threat is real and it has put herself and her new friends in danger. because Delly never anticipated making new friends and meeting a possible romantic interest.

This was just so much fun! Definitely not my usual genre but it was such an enjoyable story. loved the relationship between Delly and Winn. Winn was half troll half female and one of the most kind caring characters I’ve ever read. The characters in the story were so accepting. Everything was so fluid your appearance, your gender, your sexuality. The mystery was interesting and made even more complex by everyone’s ability to change their appearance. A little magic… a little historical fiction… a little romance… a little mystery… and a whole lotta fun!

My Mom’s Monday Book Thoughts: Comfort Reads With Jenny Colgan

Happy Monday all!

Last month my mom read her very first Jenny Colgan book and was instantly charmed by her writing. The quirky characters, the delightful settings, all the whimsy and wonder. Four books later and Jenny Colligan has a new super fan!💕

My Mom’s Thoughts

Comfort food for the body. Comfort books for the mind. Discovering Jenny Colgan was an early comfort Christmas gift—four books so far: CHRISTMAS AT THE ISLAND HOTEL, 500 MILES FROM YOU, WEST END GIRLS, WHERE HAVE ALL THE BOYS GONE.

While one was set in London and two partly there, especially delightful were the wee Scottish towns. Even more than the captivating towns were the fascinating, quirky characters what made the books appealing. They were typically young women whose lives were at a crossroad. Nothing was going smoothly for them especially in their Love lives, small setbacks occurred, awkward situations developed.

Each book left me with a smile on my face! Love the British sense of humor! Time to check on the dinner pot roast!😊

Christmas at the Island Hotel

Another heartfelt and delightful Christmas tale from the beloved New York Times best-selling author of The Bookshopon the Corner and Christmas on the Island.

New York Times best-selling author Jenny Colgan returns to the setting of Christmas on the Island and Endless Beach for a heartwarming new novel celebrating the season and Scotland.

On the tiny, beautiful, and remote island of Mure, halfway between Scotland and Norway, a new hotel opening is a big event. New mother Flora MacKenzie and her brother, Fintan, are working themselves half to death to get it ready in time for Christmas.

The new hotel’s impressive kitchens throw together two unlikely new friends: Isla Gregor is the hardworking young girl who has been a waitress in the island’s cafe, dreaming of a bigger, better life now that she’s at a proper fancy hotel. Konstantin Pederson is working his way up in the hotel’s kitchens, too…but he is also, secretly, the only son of the duke of Utsire. Konstantin has been sent to learn what it is to work hard for a living before receiving his inheritance. Although he’s initially resentful, the place grows on him; he has never met anyone quite like Isla and her fellow Murians before.

As the island’s residents and special VIP guests gather for the hotel’s grand opening gala, Christmas is in the air. But so are more than a few small-town secrets….

Where Have All the Boys Gone?

From New York Times best-selling author Jenny Colgan comes this hilarious romance about a woman who trades in the comforts of city life in hopes of finding love in a small Scottish town in the middle of nowhere.

Faced with the harsh reality that there are 25,000 more women than men in London, Katie’s dating prospects are at an all-time low. While she’s glad it’s not a man’s world anymore, it wouldn’t hurt if there were more eligible bachelors.

More likely to get murdered than married, according to gleeful media reports, Katie resigns herself to the fact that there’s no sex in the city for her and decides to head for the hills – or the Scottish Highlands to be exact. Despite the fact she’s never been one for muddy rain boats – and Fairlish is in the middle of nowhere – the tiny town does have one major draw: men. Lots of them!

But while Katie relishes the chance to do battle with armies of admirers, she’s not excited about going head to head with her shady new boss, Harry. At least there’s the local eye-candy to distract her, including gorgeous newshound Iain. But he is at loggerheads with Harry, and she can’t afford to get on Harry’s bad side any more than she already has.

Life in the country might not be one big roll in the hay, but now that Katie has taken the plunge, can she ever turn her back on the delights of Fairlish and return to city life…?

Westend Girls

New York Times best-selling author of 500 Miles from You tells the hilarious and heartwarming story of twin sisters who set out to London in hopes of leaving their mark on the world, in this “gorgeous, glorious, uplifting” novel (Marian Keyes).

They may be twins, but Lizzie and Penny Berry are complete opposites. Penny is the life of the party – loud and outrageous, while quiet and thoughtful Lizzy is often left out of the crowd. The one trait they do share is a longing to do something spectacular with their lives, and as far as these two are concerned, there’s no better place to make their dreams come true than London.

Presented with a once-in-a-lifetime house-sit at their grandmother’s home in a very desirable London neighborhood, it finally seems like Lizzie and Penny are a step closer to the exciting cosmopolitan life they’ve always wanted. But the more time they spend in the big city, they quickly discover it’s nothing like they expected. They may have to dream new dreams…but are they up to the challenge?

500 Miles From You

best-selling author Jenny Colgan returns to the beloved Scottish Highland town of Kirrinfief, which listeners first met in The Bookshop on the Shore, and adds a dash of London’s bustling urban landscape.

Lissie is a nurse in a gritty, hectic London neighborhood. Always terribly competent and good at keeping it all together, she’s been suffering quietly with PTSD after helping to save the victim of a shocking crime. Her supervisor quietly arranges for Lissie to spend a few months doing a much less demanding job in the little town of Kirrinfeif in Scottish Highlands, hoping that the change of scenery will help her heal. Lissie will be swapping places with Cormack, an Army veteran who’s Kirrinfeif’s easygoing nurse/paramedic/all-purpose medical man. Lissie’s never experienced small-town life, and Cormack’s never spent more than a day in a big city, but it seems like a swap that would do them both some good.

In London, the gentle Cormack is a fish out of the water; in Kirrinfief, the dynamic Lissie finds it hard to adjust to the quiet. But these two strangers are now in constant contact, taking over each other’s patients, endlessly emailing about anything and everything. Lissie and Cormack discover a new depth of feeling…for their profession and for each other.

But what will happen when Lissie and Cormack finally meet?

Have a lovely day! XOXO Berit💛

Beneath Cornish Skies by **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy Thursday all!

Whenever I see Cornwall or Cornish in the title I always jump at the chance to read the book. This book brought this area of the UK to such vivid life for me I now feel like I’ve actually been there.🐚

Beneath Cornish Skies

To an outsider, Cassandra Shaw‘s life looks perfect. She lives in a beautiful, luxurious house in the English countryside, with a handsome, wealthy boyfriend who insists she needn’t do a day’s work in her life. But Cassie knows that something is not right. Her boyfriend has grown colder, treating her more like a housekeeper than a future wife. And her time feels empty and purposeless.

Cassandra has always been riddled with insecurities and self-doubt, but, just for once, she decides to take a chance on a new beginning. She answers an advert for a live-in nanny, dog walker, cook and all-round ‘Superhuman’ for a family living in a rambling manor house on the rugged North Cornish coast. The work is hard and tiring, but Cassie has never felt so fulfilled.

As Cassie learns to connect with the natural beauty unfolding around her, Cornwall starts to offer up its secrets. Soon, Cassie starts wondering if she was drawn to this isolated part of the coast for a reason. Why was she guided to Foxcombe Manor? What are the flashes of light she sees in the valley? Is it her imagination or does someone brush past her? And who is the mysterious man living deep in the woods?

A beautiful romance with a hint of ghostliness, Beneath Cornish Skies is for anyone who has ever longed to start their lives again.

My Thoughts

Atmospheric and magical. Kayte Ryder’s beautifully vivid storytelling swept me away to the Cornish coast. Cassondra is tired of her controlling relationship and finding out her partner is cheating on her is the final straw. she applies for a job as a dog walker/horse wrangler/nanny/house manager for a family in Cornwall and is delighted to get the job. The work is hard but rewarding, different than her pampered past. as Cassondra becomes more and more comfortable with the change of lifestyle she ventures out. when she crosses paths with Luke she is intrigued. She loves his passion for the land and loves learning about the area’s beauty and history.

There was something so elegant about this book. I know that might sound a little strange, but I just found it classy, not even sure how to explain that. In all honesty the Romance part of the Story might have been my least favorite bit. I really liked both Cass and Luke and I definitely wanted them to end up together. But I wish Luke had not been married, that bothered me a little. what really drew me to this story was its sense of place. I seriously felt like I was in Cornwall. I also really appreciated the supernatural elements of the story, I thought that added the perfect touch. A lovely Romance with a lot of heart and a wisp of a ghost.

BENEATH HER SKIN and DYING TO BE HER by Greg Olsen **Cover Reveal** @bookouture

Happy Tuesday all!

You know I’m always up for a good cover reveal – these books both look SO GOOD!💫

About the Books

BENEATH HER SKIN

The girl was slumped over the edge of the old clawfoot tub, her eyes tiny shards of broken glass, her expression void of anything. Her long, wet hair dripped onto the floor. She was dead.

When the body of troubled teen Katelyn Berkley is found dead in her bathtub, the close-knit community of Port Gamble, Washington is shaken to its core. All signs point to a suicide but what makes her death even more tragic is that Katelyn survived a horrific bus crash ten years ago which took the lives of several young girls and has scarred the town ever since.

Hayley and Taylor Ryan are identical twins who grew up with Katelyn and have spent the last 10 years getting over the crash. Ever since that fateful night the twins have shared a secret: they can hear the dead and it soon becomes clear that Katelyn is communicating with them. Whilst the town believes it was a tragic accident, something much darker lies behind Katelyn’s death.

And all the time, someone is watching Port Gamble, someone who doesn’t want old secrets to surface…

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a compulsive thriller about two girls’ search to uncover the truth behind their friend’s death, with a touch of supernatural help. Perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Robert Dugoni and James Patterson.

This book was originally published as ENVY. This new edition has been re-edited since its publication in 2011.

DYING TO BE HER

Just as the lightning bolt of memory passed, a pair of hands grabbed Olivia’s shoulders and shoved her body backwards against the wooden floor. I’m not going to die here, am I?she thought, though the answer seemed all too clear. Am I?

Port Gamble, Washington: When the body of English exchange student Olivia Grant is found at the palatial home of local schoolgirl, Brianna Connors, the town assumes that it was a Halloween prank gone wrong. But when Brianna and her boyfriend Drew are spotted casually shopping the next day, people start to talk: how could they be so unaffected by Olivia’s death?

Twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan have received signs from beyond the grave for as long as they can remember. As the local police piece together the mystery, the girls begin to receive messages suggesting that something darker was at play that night. The killer had a target and they’re not done yet.

When the prime suspects disappear, the twins know that time is running out. But to get to the killer, they will first need to confront a close family member who has harboured a long-held secret and committed the ultimate act of betrayal.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes an unputdownable thriller about two girls’ hunt to find a killer on the run, with a touch of supernatural help. Perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Robert Dugoni and James Patterson.
