4 Dystopian Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I do love myself a Dystopian story, most of mine that I have read have been Young Adult, and I haven’t really thought about reading any others.

Nora Roberts isn’t really an author that I have picked up, which is strange because her one other book that I have read, ‘The Witness’ is one of my favourite books (Which i still need to review)

It also isn’t a secret that Nora’s pseudonym is J.D. Robb, and her hugely successful ‘In Death’ series is something that keeps getting recommended to me time and time again, but quite frankly the size intimidates me (insert joke here)

Anyhoo, Audible UK had a Boxing Day sale, and I may (or may not) have seen all of the books for £2.99 and went a bit crazy…12 books crazy! This was one of my bargain buys, so I thought let’s try it.

The Blurb

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed–and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practising in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river–or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travellers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a saviour, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

My Thoughts

4 Dystopian Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Looking at the cover picture, I honestly thought that this was going to be a fantasy book…and it is, but it also isn’t, clear as mud right?

I was crossing my fingers that this wasn’t going to be a High Fantasy book, I’ve tried so many times to read them, and each time I’ve failed…HUZZAH…It isn’t!

The story starts on New Years Eve, and here begins the end!

After the Doom Virus is contracted, it soon starts to spread like a plague, first through the hospital, then to the streets, then to the rest of the world, wiping out EVERYONE!

Well, almost everyone, you see some people seem to be immune to the virus, a good thing right? But some of these people also seem to have developed a side effect of the virus, giving different magical powers to those left alive that varies from person to person.

Some have developed wings (Fairies) some have ‘The Sight’ some can also Shape-Shift, these people are now known as Uncannies, and are very unwelcome.

We watch three separate groups, coming to realise that they are probably the only people left, we watch them try to survive in a place that is now full of people that wish to do more harm than good, how would a pregnant woman cope?

We see how people help each other out, and how power hungry others can get when faced with certain decisions.

🎧🎧 – Narrated by Julia Whelan

You won’t be surprised to hear that Julia Whelan is one of my favourite narrators, in fact, if I hadn’t seen that she was narrating this book, then I probably wouldn’t have picked it up, because as I mentioned earlier, I thought this was going to be a High Fantasy book.

As usual, Julia gives a fantastic performance, her narration always makes me feel comfortable, and wraps me up in her gorgeous warm blanket voice.

If you are thinking about trying a new genre and are a little worried about it, then give this one a shot, I’m so glad I did, and will be adding book 2 to my Audible Wishlist

Try it, You might like it!

5 Naughty John Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Well colour me surprised, one of my final reads for 2018, and a new favourite added to my shelf!

I have seen a few people recently mention this audio book, and saying that the narration is great. I had a spare credit, so I thought ‘what the hell’ and clicked the purchase button, hoping that I wasn’t going to be disappointed.

Judging by my 5 ⭐ rating, you can see that it was a credit well spent!

The Blurb

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City—and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.

Evie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.

As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened.

My Thoughts

5 Naughty John Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Naughty John, Naughty John, does his work with his apron on. Cuts your throat and takes your bones, sells ’em off for a coupla stones.”

Set in the 1920’s, New York City the time of Flapper girls and prohibition, Evie O’Neill is desperate to visit there.
She is a bit of a misfit, and manages to get herself into trouble wherever she goes.

After a drunken mistake at a party one evening, she manages to rat out the local Lothario by showing everyone her ‘party trick’
Unfortunately this doesn’t go down too well with her father, who is sick and tired of her antics, so his punishment is to send her to New York to stay with her weird Uncle Will.

Pretending to be oh so sorry, Evie can’t wait to get to NYC, in fact she thinks it is Pos-i-tute-ly the Cat’s Pajamas!

After arriving in New York, she is promptly pick-pocketed, and arrives at her Uncles house, which also doubles up as The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult, or as the locals call it, ‘The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies’.

Then the murders start happening, horrible, gruesome murders! But who is doing it?

Memphis is a ‘runner’, he gets everyone’s numbers to put on the draw (like a lottery)
He also looks out for his little brother Isaiah, who seems to have a strange ‘gift’ that he doesn’t want anyone else knowing about.

“The time is now. They are coming… Diviners

You see, there are rumours around that there are people with ‘powers’ they call them Diviners, and they are not wanted around there.

This book was so character driven, there are so many brilliant characters that I fell in love with, from Evie’s good friend Mabel, to Theta Knight, a glamorous Ziegfeld girl, to the the smooth talking Sam.

If you are thinking about reading this book, I would highly recommend the Audio Version, if you’ve never listened to one before, this one would be a great starter, simply because of the fantastic narration.

🎧🎧 – Narrated by January LaVoy, a new narrator for me, but certainly is going to be added to my favourites.

Her narration was Pos-i-tute-ly AMAZING! All of the characters has their own voices, I was not confused at any point, we also had a little bit of singing, and her Naughty John voice was just downright terrifying!

This was not a scary book, it is Young Adult after all, but it was I suppose a little creepy, but all in all it was a fantastic read, and I have book 2 lined up when my next credit drops in!

I hope you find this book the elephant’s eyebrows!

Howdy folks,

I’m thrilled to bring you my review for a little cracker I stumbled across while tumbling down the BookTube rabbit hole!

⭐⭐⭐⭐·5 Anti-Hero Stars

The Blurb

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other.

In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

My Thoughts

⭐⭐⭐⭐·5 Anti-Hero Stars
Well this one was a complete wonderful surprise for me, and I love that.

It is completely nothing that I would have picked up, but as I fell down the #BookTube rabbit hole (as you do) this one kept popping up time and time again.
So off to Goodreads I go to read some other reviews….I like to be certain!

With an average of 4.29 stars out of 5 I was certain that this was going to be another one for my “Everyone loved it but me” shelf, but nope
I LOVED it!!!

The story follows 2 friends Eli and Victor between past and present.

Ten years ago Eli and Victor meet in college and become roommates, and soon become firm friends, they are inseparable, and when a college assignment allows them to work together to discover whether EO’s (Exta-Ordinaries) exist, they follow the clues, and find out not only the truth about EO’s, but how to MAKE them, this also adds fuel to the bitter jealousy that is hiding in both of them, and does so for years.

The present tells the story of a recently escaped convict by the name of Victor, who is trying to find his old buddy turned Nemisis Eli, he is looking to find him for some good old fashioned Retribution!

Now, what is an EO I hear you saying?

Well an Extra-Ordinary (or EO for short) is a person with supernatural powers, and how do you get them?? Well you have to read the book obviously, but let me tell you this…

Forget everything you’ve read about Heros and Villians, because this book blurs the lines of each of them and flips them over and over till you don’t know which way is up, this is not the sweet Clark Kent that turns into Superman kind of read, oh no, this is dark, violent and bloody brilliant!

There were some fantastic characters in this story, from the protagonists, to the fabulous secondary characters and some great EO’s that were frankly downright frightening!

I was kind of catapulted back to an 80’s movie that I loved (which was then ruined by a remake a few years ago, sigh)

Anyhoo, as you may already know I am not a Magic/Fantasy/Paranormal kind of chick, I’ve read some I have loved, but most of the time I’ve tried…and hated them!

This one, well this one isn’t really any of those genres, but it is too, it is difficult to describe, but the author herself describes the book as X-Men + Hannibal, and that is a great definition.

I guess you had better just grab it and read it and see for yourself!

🎧🎧 Narrated by Noah Michael Levine who is a new narrator for me, he did a great job, I already have book #2 ready to listen because of that ending!!

Review

Wow……

This debut book is quite simply beautiful, from the gorgeous cover, to the amazing story, I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

If you know me at all then you will know that fantasy books are in my “Hell No” pile, i just can’t, i’ve tried and tried, but the second Magic, or Dragons, or Sorcery is mentioned, i’m calling a taxi 😂

So imagine how happy i was that my Bingo Call this week in my Goodreads group was “Read a book with a main page genre of Magic) 😱😱😱
To say i was horrified is an understatement!

So i’m looking and looking and finding NOTHING, but this book kept popping into my feed and everyone was raving about it, i pulled up my big girl panties and grabbed that sucker the second i saw it was narrated by the amazing Bahni Turpin (Who narrated The Help & Allegedly)

I’m so glad I took the jump as this story was OUTSTANDING!!!

Set in a Western African world, Zélie lives with her brother and father, her mother was slaughtered along with hundreds of others in the Genocide or “The Raid” as it is now called.

The reason for the Genocide? King Saran, a horrid ruthless man who wants to rid the world of magic.

You see Zélie’s mother was a Maji (magic person) and she was executed on King Saran’s orders.

Zélie is now a Diviner (a maji with no powers), she, and all of the maji left are waiting for the day that her magic will come to her.

Told in 3 different POV’s this stunning debut story will have you cheering Zélie on as she makes her way with her brother to bring back magic.

🎧🎧Naration is completely magical, Ms Turpin manages to read all of those complicated African words and brings them to life, it was like a movie playing in my head.

Review

This is the first book in the Others series a fabulous urban fantasy series….. I read this book in February 2017 and binged the series finishing the last book in March 2017….. I am not a huge fantasy/urban fantasy person but this book was spectacular as were all the other books in the series,…. so much love to Meg and Simon and all the rest of these amazing characters! If you are thinking of dipping your toe into this genre I strongly suggest this series…

~ review February 2017~

I think I have found myself a new favorite urban fantasy series….
The question I ask myself is what took me so long to read this book? My favorite part of books are the character and the character development… and both of these were done so very well in this book…

Meg the female protagonist was so well written… she was naïve and yet she was so strong…. and she never came across whiny, and that is something I have a problem with in a lot of books in the fantasy/urban fantasy genre…. and then we have Simon.:. a little rough around the edges, but he is a wolf after all…. all the secondary characters were done so well, they were all very necessary to the book…. and added so much color…. and I was never confused as to who was Who and I give the Author credit for this…

My favorite of these secondary characters being the bear, the crows, and of course Tess….. I also really liked the part the elementals and the ponies played in this…. shoot I could go on forever, but I won’t…. Will definitely be reading the next book in the series very, very, soon!

**** as I mentioned above I have read all the books in this series and all my favorite characters remain throughout and were fabulous throughout… and even played a bigger role in future books… cannot encourage you enough to try this series!

Be entertained in this new world,

Berit

Read an excerpt from FAMILY IS FOREVER now!

Arianna had relaxed quite a bit during our conversation. Her demeanor was casual as she played with the strap of her shoe. Her laugh came naturally. It was easy to pretend that we were still together as we sat there talking. Our arms were even touching. It sent a jolt of electricity down my spine to feel my skin against hers again. It felt like we were finally shifting, finally moving in the right direction. It was everything I’d hoped tonight would be.

After a brief pause in talking about our summer plans, Arianna pursed her lips and said, “Why have we never been friends before now? We’re in the same grade, and we must have had classes together before…but I don’t recall ever seeing you before a couple of months ago.”

I sighed, not sure how to answer that. “I don’t know… We must have just kept missing each other. But I’m so glad that’s not the case anymore. You…there’s just something about you. You’re kind, warm, accepting. You see past people’s faults, to the person they are underneath. You’re patient, forgiving, and open to things that are a little…different. But you don’t take crap from anyone either, and you stand up for what you believe in. You’re just…amazing.”

Her expression was blank. “You saw all that, sitting across the room from me?”

I peeked up at her with a small smile that I couldn’t hide. “I see you, Arianna. I see the real you.” Straightening, I met her eye and held her gaze. “And I really like what I see.”

Arianna held her breath as we stared at each other. Her heart rate spiked, and I momentarily felt bad that I could hear it. She’d probably be embarrassed if she knew I could. But then her eyes drifted to my lips, and I really didn’t care that I had a slight advantage. All I cared about was whether she wanted me to kiss her right now. Was she ready to see me as more?

I leaned in, tentative and unsure. Maybe I was misinterpreting this. Maybe, because I wanted it so badly, I was seeing something that wasn’t there. My heart was thumping in my chest so loudly, Nika probably thought I was doing something much more strenuous than just sitting on a bed, staring at Arianna, and waiting for our second first kiss to happen.

Review

4 paranormal stars 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️

OK going to start this book review out with a disclaimer… I am an over eager baby book blogger who jumped at the chance to be part of a blog tour without really paying attention to the book…..What I did not know was this book is the sixth book in the series… and this book is about vampires… I think I saw the word family and thought I’d love it, I just didn’t realize the family was of the paranormal variety….. nothing against vampire books, believe me I’ve read my fair share, it just has been a while and it was not what I was expecting, but that is on me! The problem I had with starting on the sixth book is I really didn’t necessarily understand the rules of being a vampire in this world, they seem to vary greatly from book to book, and I really had no background when it came to that….. I also didn’t know the background of the family dynamics and love relationships…. but in spite of all of this I really did enjoy this book, and that is because these characters were very wonderful…..

Julian has lost the bond with his twin sister and the love of his life….. Arianna has had her memory wiped clean she does not remember her boyfriend Julian or her best friend Mika…. so Arianna and I had a lot in common, we had no backstory, so she was probably my favorite character….. Mika’s relationship with Hunter her boyfriend/sire was quite interesting…. especially when daddy was quite overprotective….

There is quite a bit of action and suspense in this book that I didn’t always completely understand, but still found enjoyable…. I believe the moral to this review is don’t start a series on book 6! Will I pick this series up and start on the first book? Probably not because I know the ending…. and it is such a super sweet ending💗

*** thank you so much to the author and Ink Slinger PR for a copy of this book ***

Sunday Swaps – Slouch Witch by Helen Harper

Slouch Witch by Helen Harper

🌟🌟🌟·5 ok stars

Synopsis

Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses. It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.

And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

Review

This was an ok read for me not brilliant but not terrible.

World building was also nice and easy for a non Witch book loving person like me.

This definitely pulled me out of my comfort zone, and I like to do that because sometimes you find an absolute gem of a book, unfortunately for me this wasn’t one however I did enjoy it.

Ivy and winter had some really good banter between each other and I love the fact that she was a lazy Witch, something that I would totally be.

I’m not sure if I would rush out to buy book 2 but I may get round to reading it in the future.

🌹Thank you to my lovely flower Berit for the recommendation, sorry i didn’t love it too.
