Rip Current

Who can you really trust?

DI Bryony Marshall has been on the tail of Kenny Ransom for two years. He’s involved in prostitution and trafficking, but there’s never been any real proof. To complicate matters further, Bryony’s best friend from childhood is his daughter Imogen.

Bryony worries about admitting the fact that she is trying to put Imogen’s dad away, but unexpectedly, Imogen turns on her father and helps the police. Kenny finds out and swears he’ll get his revenge.

Sick of being in the police force, Bryony visits her mother in Coll and considers starting a new life.

While in Cornwaaves the life of a man caught up in a rip current in the sea.

But who is this stranger? And is Kenny really bent on revenge?

Rip Current explores the relationships between families and friends and asks who can you ever really trust.

My Thoughts

4 Dark Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Rip Current: A strong current flowing outward; presenting a hazard….

This was a dark book with plenty of “currents” pulling people away from what is right… creating many hazards in both Bryony and Imagen’s lives… this was my first book by Amanda James and I was pleasantly surprised by this dark thriller with a nice dose of romance… was not expecting the romance… and I thought it added the perfect balance to this otherwise really dark story… always love the love….

Bryony is a police detective who isn’t quite sure if that is what she wants to do for the rest of her life… Hot on the trail of her childhood BFF Imagen’s father… a despicable man involved in all kinds of horrible things…. loved the complex relationship and situation between these two strong women…. how do you come to terms with your father being a terrible man? And once you do how do you deal with his need for revenge? Parts of this book were so tense and I was furiously turning the pages to figure out what was going to happen next….

Nathan was a bit of a bright spot in the darkness of this book…. Love how Bryony and he met, so appropriate…. A subtle romance that really added some smiles to this book…. please note my romance hating friends, this will not make you roll your eyes I promise! It’s very understated….

Recommend to fans of a dark thriller with a splash of romance💕

6 Spectacular Stars🌟 The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager @riley_sager #BookReview

Happy hump day book lovers! Today I am so excited to share my review for the BEST book I’ve read so far in 2018!📚✨

The Last Time I Lied

The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager

My Thoughts

6 Strikingly Stupendous Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Yes six, seis, sexe, sechs, sei…. and I’m sure whatever language you choose to read this book in the result will be the same… it was just that fabulous!

Two truths and a lie…

1 I never gush over books!

2 this was the best book I’ve read so far this year!!!

3 Riley Sager is being added to my list of authors who I will autobuy/request.

I’m sure you figured it out… I am the queen of gushing! And this is a book that makes me want to shout from the rooftops! From first page to last this book had me captivated… this is going to sound odd but I felt as though I was in a forest of browns and greens every time I pick this book up…. it was so atmospheric and descriptive that I felt as though I was there at camp with these girls… The forest, the lake, the tension was all drawn so well by Sager… I could smell the trees, feel the water, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout this entire book!

Emma is a “final girl“ how appropriate is that? when she was at camp 15 years ago she was the only girl from her cabin to not disappear … my only complaint of Sager’s previous book was I would have liked the psychology of these “final girls” to have been explored more in depth , so… what a treat this book was! Emma now a well respected artist paints these girls in all her paintings… she sees Vivian everywhere… and she cannot let go of the fact that she had something to do with their disappearance… that is all I am saying about the plot, I do not want to ruin this gem of a book for you…

I am just so jealous of all of you who have not read this yet, what a treat you have in front of you! A campy book that will grab onto you and will not let go… a book filled with twists, Twists, and more twists, and just when you think you’ve got it all figured out….. an ending you will not see coming!

Emphatically recommend this book, especially if you are a fan of the psychological thriller genre! If you liked “Final Girls you will love “The Last Time I Lied” and that is no lie!

About the Book

Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she–or anyone–saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips.

Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings–massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends.

Yet it’s immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp’s twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present.

And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price.

Lies, lies, lies, they won’t forget you! Berit💛

Happy Publication Day! Thrilled to share my review of this darkly disturbing yet wonderful book!🎉💗🎉

You Were Made For This

You Were Made for This by Michelle Sacks

4.5 Darkly Disturbing Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

Synopsis

Doting wife, devoted husband, cherished child. Merry, Sam, and Conor are the perfect family in the perfect place. Merry adores the domestic life: baking, gardening, caring for her infant son. Sam, formerly an academic, is pursuing a new career as a filmmaker. Sometimes they can hardly believe how lucky they are. What perfect new lives they’ve built.

When Merry’s childhood friend Frank visits their Swedish paradise, she immediately becomes part of the family. She bonds with Conor. And with Sam. She befriends the neighbors, and even finds herself embracing the domesticity she’s always seemed to scorn.

All their lives, Frank and Merry have been more like sisters than best friends. And that’s why Frank soon sees the things others might miss. Treacherous things, which are almost impossible to believe when looking at this perfect family. But Frank, of all people, knows that the truth is rarely what you want the world to see.

My Thoughts

4.5 Dark and Disturbing Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

from the blurb… a dark look at marriage, motherhood,And friendship… don’t always agree with the blurb, but this one is spot on! Michelle Sacks did a fabulous job of painting a disturbing picture…. this book will make you look twice at the closest people in your life…

Sam and Mary have moved to Sweden from New York, and appear to be loving a quieter lifestyle… Mary is the picture of domesticity… baking, cooking, gardening, cleaning, and taking care of her adorable infant son Connor… Sam is taking on A new career and seems more than pleased to have Mary at home playing the loving wife…

This book was told from three different points of view… Mary, Sam, and Mary’s longtime friend Frank who comes for a visit… wow! Looking back my first impressions of these characters sure did change by the end… don’t want to say too much, but none of these characters were terribly likeable…. and a lot of their actions were down right despicable….. One minute I’d be feeling sympathy for a character and then they’d do something and all sympathy went out the window…. and the friendship between Mary and Frank? With friends like that who needs enemies? This book left me feeling as though I needed to take a shower (and not a cold shower)…

This book made you realize things are never quite as they seem…. you only know somebody as well as they allow you to know them…. and everybody has some kind of secret…. A very well done dark and disturbing thriller filled with plenty of characters to dislike!*Warning* some of the content in this book might be a little hard for a more sensitive reader….

Absolutely recommend to fans of a strong psychological/domestic thriller with a darker side….

Jar of Hearts

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

4.5 Creepy Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

Synopsis

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who’s been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong’s remains are discovered in the woods near Geo’s childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he’s something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo’s first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.

For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela’s death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.

How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it?

~My Review~

4.5 Creepy Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

“Who do you Think you are? Runnin’ ‘round leaving scars. Collecting your jar of hearts. And tearing love apart.“

Christina Perri 🎵Jar of Hearts🎵

What if you had thought you got away with murder for 14 years? What if you found out your high school boyfriend was a serial killer? Welcome to Geo’s world! Geo was a complicated character… I found her very likable, but I knew she had a huge dark secret, and had done something bad…. I mean she was in jail and she wasn’t claiming that she was innocent…. but how big a part did she play in the murder of her high school BFF Angela?

Loved how this story was told… Clues were given and memories were revealed at the perfect pace… I felt the tension and terror that Geo felt throughout the entire story…. The parts of the book that took place in prison were interesting, however some of them were downright disturbing…. but at least in prison she was safe from Calvin her ex-boyfriend who was a serial killer, or was she?

Kaiser who was BFFs with both Angela and Geo in high school was Geo’s arresting officer… Kaiser has always had a thing for Geo, so he was very conflicted…. really liked him and couldn’t help but think… had she just dated him all of this could have been avoided… so many twists and an ending I did not see coming…

Absolutely recommend to fans of the psychological thriller with a bit of a darker side🖤🖤🖤

~My Review~

5 Tension Filled Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Well HOT damn this book was just… brilliant! Full disclosure I was running behind on my reviews so I purchased this on audio on release day and I was even a little hesitant because I saw the author was narrating…. not always a good thing, but I had no idea that Catherine Steadman is an actress…. and after finishing this book I now know she is also a fantastic author and audiobook narrator!!! Simply amazing! Seriously if I could I would give her narration six stars, it was really exceptional! And this book kept me on the edge of my seat from about 30% on…

Erin and Mark are a happy newly married couple on their honeymoon in Bora Bora… they are having a wonderful time in this tropical paradise until…thunk thunk… there is something in the water…. and what it is will alter this couple’s lives…. from this point on the tension is ramped up and I felt as though I was on the edge of my seat throughout… so many thoughts… what would I do in this situation? What is the ethical thing to do?

Erin and Mark were both fabulous characters… they both handled the situation so differently and I found that part so compelling and true….Erin was very bold about it all and didn’t always think things through, in fact sometimes she did some really stupid things… Mark on the other hand was more cautious, not much of a risk taker, although he was usually fine with his wife taking a risk…. I have to say I was both surprised and a little disappointed by both of these characters at points in this book….

There is also a very fascinating side story in this book… Erin is filming a documentary about prisoners about to be released…. Eddie, Holly, and Alexa were all strong, interesting, and well-developed characters…. I found each of their storys compelling and unique…. definitely added another layer to this already wonderful book…. and the voice of eddie is absolutely the best in this audio!

This really was a book unlike any other I have read before… it was very refreshing…. absolutely recommend to everybody regardless of your reading preferences!

The Disappearance of Sloane Sullivan by Gia Cribbs @GiaCribbs @HarlequinTeen #BookReview

Happy Monday y’all! Today I am bringing you my review for this wonderful young adult contemporary/thriller… Young or old I think you will thoroughly enjoy this book if you are a fan of thrillers with a splash of teenage angst💕

The Disappearance of Sloane Sullivan

The Disappearance of Sloane Sullivan by Gia Cribbs

4.5 Sloan Sullivan Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

Synopsis

No one wants me to tell you about the disappearance of Sloane Sullivan.

Not the lawyers or the cops. Not her friends or family. Not even the boy who loved her more than anyone. And most certainly not the United States Marshals Service. You know, the people who run the witness protection program or, as it’s officially called, the Witness Security Program? Yeah, the WITSEC folks definitely don’t want me talking to you.

But I don’t care. I have to tell someone.

If I don’t, you’ll never know how completely wrong things can go. How a single decision can change everything. How, when it really comes down to it, you can’t trust anyone. Not even yourself. You have to understand, so it won’t happen to you next. Because you never know when the person sitting next to you isn’t who they claim to be…and because there are worse things than disappearing.

~My Review~

4.5 Sloan Sullivan Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

This book was just so much fun to read… I enjoyed it from first page to last… The book was like a mash up of a YA contemporary and a thriller…. and warning to my thriller loving friends, the first 60% of this book is filled with quite a bit of teenage angst…. I found it a perfect blend, however it is a slow building thriller… but well worth it!

Sloan is a typical teenager… with the same dreams and feelings as other teens… The difference Sloan isn’t her real name, in fact this is the 19th name she’s had in the past six years… sloan has been in witness protection ever since she was 12 and witnessed a murder along with her father…. but she only has nine more weeks… and then she will be Sloan Sullivan forever living a normal life going to college…. so when on her first day at the new school she runs into Jason a boy from her past, she is not going to tell Mark her handler…. nothing is standing in her way of a normal life….

sloan was a fabulous character… smart and funny and never feeling sorry for herself and her situation…. I loved the bond between Jason and her… there were quite a few adorable and swoon worthy moments in the first part of this book…. along with a scavenger hunt, senior trip, and of course the prom…. also found the relationship between Sloan and Mark (her handler) really interesting, the trust you’d need to have for that person….

I thought Sloan’s past was revealed to us very well… and I enjoyed all the flashbacks of her time in witness protection and before… there were some intense moments towards the end of this book and some twists I was caught off guard by… extremely well done especially for A debut!

Absolutely recommend to fans of a slow building thriller, just keep in mind these are teenagers and the beginning of this book is filled with all kinds of teenage nonsense and fun… I think this book is perfect for all ages, and if you are a parent I’d say 15 and up, there is some partying and sexual references….

The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll #BookReview @JessMKnoll #CrazyTrain

All aboard! Today I am bringing you my review for a book that will take you for a ride on the crazy train… A ride that starts off slow, but once it gets going… welcome to the world of Cray Cray!🚂

The Favorite Sister

The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll

4 WTH Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis

When five hyper-successful women agree to appear on a reality series set in New York City called Goal Diggers, the producers never expect the season will end in murder…

Brett’s the fan favorite. Tattooed and only twenty-seven, the meteoric success of her spin studio—and her recent engagement to her girlfriend—has made her the object of jealousy and vitriol from her cast mates.

Kelly, Brett’s older sister and business partner, is the most recent recruit, dismissed as a hanger-on by veteran cast. The golden child growing up, she defers to Brett now—a role which requires her to protect their shocking secret.

Stephanie, the first black cast member and the oldest, is a successful bestselling author of erotic novels. There have long been whispers about her hot, non-working actor-husband and his wandering eye, but this season the focus is on the rift that has opened between her and Brett, former best friends—and resentment soon breeds contempt.

Lauren, the start-up world’s darling whose drinking has gotten out of control, is Goal Diggers’ recovery narrative—everyone loves a comeback story.

And Jen, made rich and famous through her cultishly popular vegan food line plays a holistic hippie for the cameras, but is perhaps the most ruthless of them all when the cameras are off.

Review

4 WTH Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

If you like to keep up with the Kardashians or can’t wait to see who gets voted off the island next, then you will enjoy this book… I don’t watch much television, but when I do it is usually trashy reality television…. there is just something I find enticing about getting a look into other peoples lives… something I felt this book did really well….

Five women who appear to have everything on the outside… beauty, strength, confidence, and status… Brett, Stephanie, Kelly, Lauren, and Jen make up the cast of ”GoldDiggers”…. a cast of women who appear perfect on the outside and yet are all hot messes…. who love to do nothing more than stab each other in the back…. to add more complexity to the situation Brett and Kelly are sisters…. and this season one of the cast members is killed, but the show must go on….

None of these women were likable… with the exception of Kelly’s 12-year-old daughter Layla, but give her a few years…. and as the show and the book progressed they became even more unlikable…. The secrets, the lies, the plotting, it was all crazy, and none of it did I predict…. Half the time I was thinking to myself… oh no she didn’t? And the other half I was thinking… what? Seriously the last 20% of this book was quite the ride on the crazy train!

Quite a few of my book friends had a hard time getting into this and thought the start was very slow… and in discussing this book I realize it is not for everybody, but I thoroughly enjoyed it…. The only slight problem I had with it was it did get a little preachy at times when it came to feminism… I mean truthfully the entire book was about women tearing down other women, but perhaps that was the point…. now I’m feeling like a slight hypocrite, I really do absolutely love strong female friendships in books, and this book really was the complete opposite of that… yet still very entertaining🙃

Strongly recommend if you enjoy reality TV, hot messes, and the crazy train…

Review

4 Creepy and Spooky Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Is there really a Bloody Mary video game? I’m just wondering how that works? I remember gathering in the bathroom at midnight with my friends at sleepovers, never quite making it to those 10 “Bloody Marys…“ this book really brought back memories of all those creepy childhood stories… is the boogie man really under my bed? Can my Tina doll really talk? I’m not one to necessarily believe in the supernatural, but I’m not above getting a little creeped out when something goes bump in the night…

What this book did brilliantly was blend together a twisty psychological thriller and an element of the supernatural… in the beginning I had no idea what was going on was this house haunted? Are these people crazy? Who is singing? Who is taking things and moving them around? What is going bump in the night? I have to admit if I were at this “Retreat“ I would be high tailing it out of there just like Karen did!

Lucas is an author who has headed to Wales to a writers retreat… to work on his follow up novel to his best seller… Julia is the widow who owns this retreat, she also lost her husband two years ago… her husband jumped in the river to save their daughter, who they believed had fallen in, but Lily’s body was never recovered… I can’t even imagine how excruciating this would be, so I could completely understand why Julia still believed her daughter was alive…

This book had me guessing until the bitter end…. I really had no idea how this was going to end, and the very final twist…. not even sure how I feel about that, but it sure made me think…. and all the pieces came together and were completely plausible and believable…

Absolutely recommend when you are in the mood for a spooky atmospheric book filled with things that go bump in the night and some twists on top…

Well, this is the week of unlikable characters…. another book filled with people I would not want to spend the day with or probably even an hour with, but somehow I found them quite compelling… and what I have learned this week from this book and another I read that was slightly similar… is if you cannot afford to live in a house and they are happy to give it to you… something is wrong! So yes if things are too good to be true, they probably are….

Connor needs to find a new place to live, and quickly…. so when a lovely bungalow in an elite neighborhood becomes available, he cannot believe how lucky he is to have snapped it up…. Connor is a therapist and intends on seeing his patients in the perfect office in his new home…. and everything is perfect until his first patient arrives and the neighbor kid starts jumping on his trampoline and creating quite the ruckus, causing that session to end prematurely…. turns out the neighbor kid is a teenager with some serious issues, most of them loud…. also turns out that one of his ex patients with a grudge is now one of his new neighbors… coincidence?

Everyone in this book was a serious hot mess…. they all needed some serious therapy and not from Connor…. not even sure how I would classify this book, perhaps as a family drama with a few twists… admittedly it took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did I was hooked…. really wanted to figure out what made these people tick…. and why was everyone so hostile towards one another….

I do recognize this book will not be for everybody… there is a very dark undercurrent to it…. it really shows the ugly side of humanity, and the consequences of that…. if you are looking for an uplifting feel good book, this is not your book… but if you are in the mood for a compelling read with some pretty gritty characters, I’d recommend….

*** thank you too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this book ***

PS: this really has nothing to do with the book, but it was something that bothered me for some unknown reason… The author referred to a few things as being North American, such as a North American facial expression…. I live about two hours away from the border between the US and Mexico, and I can tell you they’re probably very few facial expressions we share…. I almost felt as though Mexico was forgot to be part of North America…. when some of these statements were made…. but this could just be because I am someone in America who lives close to Mexico and knows there is a pretty big difference….. no biggie it was just something I noticed and really have never heard before….🇺🇸🇲🇽🇨🇦
