Eve’s Christmas by Julie Butterfeild @rararesources #bookspotlight

Hello bookish friends!

Guess what! I have another Christmas book for you all! This one looks so fun and so festive! Hoping I can get to it before Christmas!🎄

Eve’s Christmas

Working for a department store where Christmas arrives in August, Eve prefers her own festivities to be low key with nothing more complicated than an oven ready turkey and frozen peas while she spends the day in her pyjamas. Unfortunately, this year her husband has invited his best friend to visit, the glamorous and sophisticated Abby, and Eve reluctantly decides that she needs to inject a little sparkle into their laid back and slightly shabby Christmas. So the celebrations are upgraded to include champagne and canapes along with homemade gravy and organic turkey and plans are made for a Christmas that looks as though it has emerged from the pages of a glossy magazine.

But even the best laid plans can go wrong and as Eve struggles with her mini Yorkshire puddings and an interfering cat, she is suddenly faced with an unexpected guest and an explosive secret that threatens to put her vision of a perfect Christmas in jeopardy.

Author Bio – Julie Butterfield belongs to the rather large group of ‘always wanted to write’ authors who finally found the time to sit down and put pen to paper – or rather fingers to keyboard.

She wrote her first book purely for pleasure and was very surprised to discover that so many people enjoyed the story and wanted more, so she decided to carry on writing.

It has to be pointed out that her first novel, ‘Did I Mention I Won The Lottery’ is a complete work of fiction and she did not, in fact, receive millions in her bank account and forget to mention it to her husband – even though he still asks her every day if she has anything to tell him!

She’s been hired to help Stefan Lambert, an injured army helicopter pilot who’s staying at the local Belthorn Manor whilst he recovers. Stefan resents Cassie’s interference and is definitely not looking for Christmas cheer. But Cassie prides herself on sparkling surfaces – so, can she bring some festive sparkle to Stefan’s life too?

guest post – Audio Killed the Bookmark

Although I’ve had cause to write reports and presentations throughout my working life, it’s only fairly recently that I’ve started writing fiction (if you don’t count some of the creative embellishments in my reports).

My wife is the author, Elly Grant and after observing how much enjoyment she received from her writing I was attracted to give it a try. I was pleased with my first attempts writing flash fiction and this gave me the bug.

My first venture into full length storytelling came when I had the idea of a character I wanted to write about. He was influenced by my business experience where I’d often seen (and personally experienced) situations of people having to play multiple roles in their working life requiring them to compartmentalise their different responsibilities and ‘ring fence’ each of them.

The idea I had for my character, Benjamin, was an extreme version of compartmentalisation. He was someone who used his intelligence, wealth and power to consciously ring fence the different aspects of his life, creating a separate personae for each, where he was careful to ensure they didn’t overlap or influence one other. One ‘life’ was time spent with his birth family, another with his wife and children, a third was his work life as director of a commercial bank, a fourth as a writer of pornographic literature and joint owner of the very successful company which published his material, and finally, a separate version of himself for time spent with his mistress.

At the start, I had no idea that the piece would end up as a novel. I devised his five different lives, and I started writing about him and how he functioned. I tried to put myself inside his head to imagine what he was experiencing. As I did, different plot lines developed although I truly didn’t know where it was going. It was as if the story was revealing itself to me as I was writing. [perhaps this was a sixth (hidden) persona Benjamin had, narrating books to authors.] Various adventure aspects developed when Benjamin’s wife confided in him that a former boyfriend of hers was trying to blackmail her, with photos he’d taken when they’d been in a relationship many years earlier. Benjamin uses resources from his other ‘lives’ to take ownership of the problem, seeking to administer his own version of justice. In doing so he creates cracks in the integrity of the ring fenced walls he’d so meticulously constructed. You’ll need to read the book to find out what happened next and how Benjamin and others dealt with the consequences.

After publishing Ring Fenced, I went on to write my Alex Warren series (four murder mystery books set in Glasgow) and my financial crime thriller Source. I’ve also written a non-fiction book– So, You Think You Want to be a Landlord; it’s a reader friendly guide book for people aspiring to be residential property landlords and the first of my planned self-help books in the series, Mind Your Own Business. It’s difficult to motivate myself to write non-fiction when exercising my imagination writing crime and thrillers is so much more fun.

Currently, I’m part way through writing a new book, with the working title, “133 Hours.” It’s a claustrophobic psychological thriller where, for the first time, I’m writing in the first person. I hope it may become available for publication in autumn 2019. After that, who knows?

The Other Side of Books

By Grace Parks

There are three sides to every story. Your side. Their side. The truth. And the truth is usually an amalgamation of both sides. Life is never black and white. While this is about books, this post can apply to any of the creative arts. The moment you put something you’ve created out into the world, is the moment all your walls come crashing down. Not by you, but by everyone who is there to judge you. And judge you they will.

Recently, a girl in one of my Facebook writing groups admitted anxiety and fear was getting in the way of her writing. What followed was a slew of encouragement from other writers, most of whom suffer from the same inflictions. However, these comments were from fellow writers, and not the general public. That’s the difference. It showed me that most creatives have a tendency for deep insecurities, yet we’ve put ourselves in a situation that’s asking for ridicule. It’s not an easy route to take, and probably the biggest reason why most people never end up sharing their creations. I wonder how many amazing books are stored on computers all around the world. It’s sad to think that most of these will never get seen.

People forget that there is an actual person behind a book (or creation). They don’t see the excitement, the fears, the endless hours of work that goes into it. They don’t see the human side to it. So far, I’ve been lucky with my books, but that’s probably because I’m still new to it. The more people who read my books, the more I’ll be exposing myself to negative reviews. So far, my reviews have been great, and mostly positive. Some have been so wonderful they have reduced me to happy tears (and an awkward little dance at my desk). I never understood the joy someone would get from a good review until now. I’ve had one bad review, one little two star on Goodreads that shattered my fragile heart. I quickly went through some famous authors, like Stephen King, to see what reviews they got. In King’s one book he had around 2000 one star reviews and a load of awful comments. As ridiculous as this was, it made me feel a bit better. If King could get bad reviews, I could too. Sure, I know that we all have different tastes. What I love you might hate, but there’s a way of putting your point across while still remembering the person on the receiving end. You don’t have to like something, but you don’t have to slate it either.

It’s sad that we live in a world where we’re so frightened to share something of ourselves for fear of what others might say. So, for those who have put their work out there regardless of this, I salute you. Let’s be brave (or at least pretend to be)together.

Author Bio – My name’s Eve Devon and I write sexy heroes, sassy heroines and happy ever afters…

Growing up in locations like Botswana and Venezuela gave me a taste for adventure and my love for romances began when my mother shoved one into my hands in a desperate attempt to keep me quiet during TV coverage of the Wimbledon tennis finals.

When I wasn’t consuming books by the bucket-load, I could be found pretending to be a damsel in distress or running around solving mysteries and writing down my adventures. As a teenager, I wrote countless episodes of TV detective dramas so the hero and heroine would end up together every week. As an adult, I worked in a library to conveniently continue consuming books by the bucket-load, until realising I was destined to write contemporary romance and romantic suspense myself. I live in leafy Surrey in the UK, a book-devouring, slightly melodramatic, romance-writing sassy heroine with my very own sexy hero husband!

Crossline

Welcome to the blog tour for Sci-Fi/ Adventure CROSSLINE, by Russ Colchamiro! I have an excerpt, book trailer, and a fantastic giveaway for you all today! Check it out!

NEWCrosslinefrontcover.jpgCROSSLINE

First Published: March 2013

Genre: Science Fiction/ Fantasy

“A high-flying adventure of a novel, filled with ambitious ideas and a breathtaking conclusion.” — The Leighgendarium

In the SciFi/Fantasy spirit of Firefly, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Stargate, and Escape from New York…

Hotdog pilot Marcus Powell has been selected to test Taurus Enterprises’ Crossline prototype craft and its newly developed warp thrusters, which, if successful, will revolutionize space travel as we know it.

But during his jaunt across the stars, Powell is forced into a parallel universe — including a parallel Earth — where he finds himself at the center of an epic battle he may have been destined for all along.

Meanwhile, back home, reclusive oil tycoon and Taurus CEO Buddy Rheams Jr. — who sent Powell on that very mission — has a mysterious past and a secret agenda, one that could prevent Powell from ever making it back to his wife and little girl.

From author Russ Colchamiro, Crossline is a psychedelic, action-packed romp across time, space, and dimension that asks the question: once you cross the line, can you ever really go back?

Add to Goodreads

Excerpt

The warp engines were ready for the first of six return blasts it would take to get him back to Earth, when a blip came across the screen. Powell shifted toward the incoming message, but his short-range sensor interrupted him. Something in the Saturn rings. Video amplification revealed that among a cluster of particles was an odd-shaped fragment, with sharper, more reflective edges than he would expect. But he supposed that after debris crashed around over millions if not billions of years, who knew what was really out there? He looked again. Probably nothing of consequence. Just some lagging hallucination from the multiple warps.

As suspected. Just ice particles swirling around the planet. Billions of frozen blue ice particles floating in space that—

Powell focused his monitor on the third ring layer. Studying it more carefully, his sensors revealed that the particle cluster wasn’t in the Saturn ring, but among it. The fragment wasn’t ran- dom, a collection of dust, or some anomalous asteroid fragment.

It was another ship. Looking just like Crossline. And headed his way.

When he answers the call, he learns that he is a descendant of a race of winged people that profess to be from the Heavens. He also learns more about his past and is given hope for the future, but that hope comes with a high price. Lorn is given a choice: he can save his family or watch them die.
Lililaira and their daughter are taken prisoner by her father, the King of Skoria, Lorn must call on all his resources to rescue them. Forced out of the protective walls of Jior, he must face his many enemies who use his wife and daughter as bait. King Lorn must deal with old enemies and new friends, but will he be able to tell the difference?

Strange dreams plagued his sleep at night. At first, he thought the dreams
were caused by apprehension over the news of the army advancing on Jior.
Each night the dreams seemed to grow more urgent, and he could not assign
blame to that cause anymore.  As soon as he closed his eyes, images of a
strange place haunted him.  Night after night he dreamed of the same
mountaintop.  On the high peak stood an ancient structure with tall marble
columns, circling a huge stone floor.  The columns did not support anything
solid but seemed to hold up the deep blue sky that quickly swelled with
impending snowfall.  The wind swirled ice crystals through the columns and
seemed to call his name in the whispery tinkle of ice against stone.  Lorn
felt compelled to fly west.  He strained to resist the compunction, telling
himself it was the greatest folly to think that a place from his dreams
truly existed and that he could find it.

This set of adventures starts out with Princess Lyra Song, young and beautiful, stepping into maturity. She and her family attend the funeral of a dear friend. During this sad time, she pursues her hopes and dreams endeavoring to explore a betrothal with the Heir of Krickgold. However, when she is mistaken for a witch by a Lord from a neighboring country, her dreams are dangerously interrupted. Waylaid, taken prisoner and thrown into an iron cage, the delicate Princess of Jior is charged with a crime she didn’t commit and she must do whatever it takes to escape or be wrongfully executed.

Prince Vannier of Jior, known to the Ny-Failen as Little Wing, has been devastated by what happened to his sister Lyra Song, but life must go on and he goes forward with his plan to marry his childhood love. The day of the wedding ceremony he finds his betrothed with another man and now he must face devastating reality and some difficult choices. When his younger brother Dark Star goes missing, Vannier must set aside his own problems to go into the Violent Mountains and find who has taken his little brother. Amidst the turmoil of the hunt, Vannier must face danger, loss, and possible heartbreak.

Dark Star, the youngest Prince of Jior, has been changed forever by the events of his capture and he remains troubled and unable to find peace. A mysterious compelling draws him away from the safety of his home and family. He sets off on his own to investigate and finds a black castle and a beautiful sorceress in dire need of his help. Dark Star must face a demon from the Hells to free them both.

Panic struck like a lightning bolt, and he stood up and whirled around,
taking stock of the boundaries of his prison.  It was nearly his undoing as
pain, nausea and dizziness overtook him.  Since his capture by the Troggs a
few years back, Dark Star could not stand confined spaces.  His wings beat
against his back as if telling him to fly and escape.  Searching for a door
or exit, he could not find one, so he threw himself against the bars on all
four sides, testing their strength.  He flew up to the barred cage top and
heaved.  It was no use, he was imprisoned in a strong, heavy, iron prison,
and that was all there was to it.  He was locked in with no way out, like a
bird in a cage.  His brain kept screaming over and over, ‘Not again! Not
again!’ and he flapped uselessly around the confines of his cage until the
pain in his head forced him to stop.  Tamping down hard on his terror,
concentrating on settling his breathing, he stood in the middle of his cage,
wrapped his wings around himself and huddled within their protective
embrace.  Closing his eyes, he retreated into his mind and waited.

It seemed like hours later when the sound of a door opening and closing
reached through his self-imposed trance. The faint glow of a lamp barely
drew Dark Star’s attention.  He was standing completely still, cocooned
within his white wings watching through barely slit eyes.  He had withdrawn
into his own mind, holding madness at bay.
