Summer in Provence by Lucy Coleman **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy Friday all!

Hope you are staying safe and well! This was such a great story with a beautiful setting! The perfect escape from the craziness going on in the world right now. 🎨

Summer in Provence

Is a change as good as a rest?

When married couple Fern and Aiden have a windfall, their reactions could not be more different. While Fern is content to pay off their mortgage and build a nest egg before starting a family, her husband is set on traveling the world.

Fern’s not much of a back-packer so, before she knows it, the idea of a ‘marriage gap year’ takes shape. And, as Aiden heads off to the wilds of Australia, Fern chooses the more restful Provence for her year out.

Set amidst the glorious French scenery, Château de Vernon offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and Fern agrees to help out in return for painting lessons from the owner – renowned, but rather troubled, painter Nico.

As their year unfolds in very different ways, will the time apart transform their marriage, or will it drive Fern and Aiden even further apart…

Let Lucy Coleman whisk you off on a heart-warming, sun-drenched and magical French adventure.

My Thoughts

A lottery win, a marriage gap year, a retreat in Provence. Lucy Coleman writes captivating stories with gorgeous settings. When Fern and Aiden win the lottery you’d think this would be a happy event but… Fern and Aden have very different ideas about what they want to do with this money, and this leads to them confronting how different their dreams are. Aidan wants to travel the world and Fern is afraid of flying. This leads to Aiden proposing a marriage gap year where they both follow their individual dreams. Fern decides to go along even though she’s not crazy about the idea. Always wanting to pursue her artistic side Fern decides to volunteer at a art retreat in a Château in Provence.

Loved the setting of this gorgeous retreat. Also loved all the characters at the Château especially brooding artist Nico. I also really liked Fern’s siblings Owen and Hannah and was confused why her parents were so distant (although that does make sense later in the book). Fern was a great character and I really loved her growth throughout the book. It was fun seeing her realize her artistic talents and learn to relax a little. Nico what is a compelling character and I really liked the friendship that formed between Fern and him. This was one of those books where I wasn’t quite sure what direction it was going to take, and I was a little worried. But I did not need to worry because The story really went in the perfect direction. Wasn’t necessarily the direction I was thinking it would go in but I think it was lovely. A beautiful feel good heartwarming story with the perfect ending and even some bonus content.

Valentine by Elizabeth Wetmore **Audiobook Review** @harperbooks @harperaudio

Happy Monday all!

This is a book you NEED to put on your TBR! It comes out March 31 and I cannot put into words how authentic, profound, and beautiful the story was!

My Thoughts

Profound. Poignant. Authentic. Raw. Beautiful. Elizabeth Wetmore’s debut Took my breath away and left me speechless. There is no way that my words can do this story justice. It was so beautifully written, so emotionally evocative, so true and authentic. West Texas 1976 The land is dry, the oil is pumping, guns are prevalent, racism is rampid, the good ole boys are in charge, and the women are in the home. When 14-year-old Gloria shows up on Mary rose’s porch battered and bruised she does not see the young girl as a Mexican she sees her as her own daughter. When Gloria’s attacker shows up Mary Rose stands up to him a tense standoff ensues. Corine is a cantankerous older woman who is dealing with the recent death of her beloved husband Porter. When Mary Rose moves into town across from Corine the women form a bond based on mutual respect.

The story is primarily told from the perspectives of Mary Rose, Gloria, and Corrine. We also get some snapshots from other characters including 10-year-old Debora Ann whose mother has just split town. Every character in this book has such a unique voice, such a profound story, and were so well drawn I just knew I would know who they were if they were walking down the street. The time and place was also perfectly developed, I could taste the dust in my mouth and smell the oil on my skin. I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to listen to this on audio and the narrators Cassandra Campbell and Jenna Lamia were superb. They really brought this poignant and vivid story to life with their voices. A beautiful story about ugly subject matter, this is the type of book that stays with you long after you have finished the last page.

About the Book

Written with the haunting emotional power of Elizabeth Strout and Barbara Kingsolver, an astonishing debut novel that explores the lingering effects of a brutal crime on the women of one small Texas oil town in the 1970s.

Mercy is hard in a place like this….

It’s February 1976, and Odessa, Texas, stands on the cusp of the next great oil boom. While the town’s men embrace the coming prosperity, its women intimately know and fear the violence that always seems to follow.

In the early hours of the morning after Valentine’s Day, 14-year-old Gloria Ramírez appears on the front porch of Mary Rose Whitehead’s ranch house, broken and barely alive. The teenager had been viciously attacked in a nearby oil field – an act of brutality that is tried in the churches and barrooms of Odessa before it can reach a court of law. When justice is evasive, one of the town’s women decides to take matters into her own hands, setting the stage for a showdown with potentially devastating consequences.

Valentine is a haunting exploration of the intersections of violence and race, class, and region in a story that plumbs the depths of darkness and fear, yet offers a window into beauty and hope. Told through the alternating points of view of indelible characters who burrow deep in the listener’s heart, this fierce, unflinching, darkly funny, and surprisingly tender novel illuminates women’s strength and vulnerability, and reminds us that it is the stories we tell ourselves that keep us alive.

The Cottage on Wildflower Lane by Liz Davies @rararesources #coverreveal

Happy Wednesday all!

So excited to share with you today this gorgeous cover for a book that I am so excited to read!💐

The Cottage on Wildflower Lane

Esther’s life isn’t perfect (whose is?) – but she’s happy enough living in her little flat with her boyfriend, Josh.

But that’s about to change.

Bored out of her mind in work, she wishes that something, anything, would happen to liven her life up.

Unfortunately, her wish comes true when Josh calls her from the airport to tell her he’s going to work in a bar in Spain, and she’s not invited, Esther is devastated, and her unhappiness is compounded when she discovers she can actually view the bar via a webcam link and watch him chatting up other girls.

But when she inadvertently clicks on a link to another webcam which shows a pretty cottage and the rather hunky man who lives in it, her interest is piqued and she wishes she could get to know him.

Wishes don’t really come true, though – do they…?

Publication Date: 14th February

Author Bio –

Liz Davies writes feel-good, light-hearted stories with a hefty dose of romance, a smattering of humour, and a great deal of love.

She’s married to her best friend, has one grown-up daughter, and when she isn’t scribbling away in the notepad she carries with her everywhere (just in case inspiration strikes), you’ll find her searching for that perfect pair of shoes. She loves to cook but isn’t very good at it, and loves to eat – she’s much better at that! Liz also enjoys walking (preferably on the flat), cycling (also on the flat), and lots of sitting around in the garden on warm, sunny days.

She currently lives with her family in Wales, but would ideally love to buy a camper can and travel the world in it.
