Untouchable by Jayne Ann Krentz @jayneannkrentz @BerkleyPub #bookbestiereadsuntouchable #bookreview #aktbmbookblog

TGIF! Last day of holiday vacation for me, back to life, back to reality!

Today I am sharing with you a book I read with my Book Besties, romantic suspense that was very heavy on the suspense and kept us all on our toes!💕

Untouchable

by Jayne Ann Krentz

My Thoughts

A riveting romantic suspense with a large dose of suspense and a dab of romance, that kept me on my toes!

Jayne Ann Krentz is a comfort read for me, I remember reading her ages ago… there are few authors I read both in my 20s and my 40s and JAK is one of them…. this is the third book in this series and the first book I read… from what I can tell each book is self-contained and about a different foster brother…. I think what I missed from not reading the previous books is the villain was not completely fleshed out… other than that I believe this book can absolutely be read as a standalone, but after reading this book you might want to go back and check out the other brothers stories….

Jack is a consultant for the FBI working cold cases… having lost his mother to a fire a lot of his investigation involves cases of fire, he also has some dream/sleep issues…. I have to admit I never completely understood or bought into some of Jack’s dream scenes in this book.. I think he was hunting for people in his dreams, I’m not sure, I have to admit this was a pretty confusing part of this book… in all honesty this did not need to be included, but that’s my opinion…. The positive side of this dream searching was this is how he met Winter Meadows… A meditation therapist with a fabulous name! Soon after meeting, Jack and Winter had the bad guys after them… this pursuit took them up and down the California coast…

I really liked how they investigated the criminals, I liked how Jack looked into the cold cases and put the pieces together… I liked the chemistry between Jack and Winter I thought it very organic… and I really love the character of Winter… I would have really enjoyed an entire book just about her she was very strong and resourceful and sassy…. I also would have really loved some more scenes with all three of the brothers, I really would’ve liked to see that bond more… but perhaps that is something I missed in the previous books?

A fast-paced, action packed, tension filled story that will appeal to fans of romantic suspense! Recommend!

*** many thanks to Berkley for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

A man’s quest to find answers for those who are haunted by the past leads him deeper into the shadows in this electrifying novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Promise Not to Tell.

Quinton Zane is back.

Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer’s head has garnered him a reputation in some circles–and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.

But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family’s hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas’s foster sons, starting with Jack.

Excerpt

She heard the key in the lock. The door opened. The creep was silhouetted against the light of the hallway fixture, a balding, big-bellied man dressed in an undershirt and trousers.

He did not see her sitting there in the shadows of the upper bunk. He moved into the room, heading toward the lower bunk.

He reached down and started to pull the covers off of Alice’s thin, huddled body.

“Go away, Mr. Tyler,” Winter said. She switched on the penlight and began to move it in an intricate pattern. “You’re not supposed to be here. You don’t want to be here.”

She kept her voice calm; soothing but firm.

Startled, Tyler halted and instinctively averted his gaze from the narrow beam of light.

“What the hell?” In the next breath he softened his voice to a drunken croon. “What’s the matter, honey? Couldn’t sleep? I know it’s hard adjusting to a new house and a new family. But you’re in a good home now. There’s nothing to worry about. I’ll take care of you and Alice.”

“Go away, Mr. Tyler,” Winter said again. She kept the penlight moving, faster now.

Tyler was distracted by the light. He stared at; looked away and then gazed at it again.

“I’m going to take poor little Alice to my bedroom,” he said. “She’s afraid to be alone.”

“Alice is not alone,” Winter said. “I’m here with her. Go away. You don’t want to be in this room. It’s hard to breathe when you come in here. You can’t catch your breath. Your heart is pounding harder and harder. You wonder if you’re having a heart attack.”

Tyler did not respond. He was transfixed by the motion of the light. He started to wheeze.

“When I say Winnie-the-Pooh you will realize that you can’t breathe at all when you’re in this room,” Winter said. “You will leave. That is the only way to ease the terrible pain in your chest. If you stay in this room you will have a heart attack. Do you understand?”

“Yes.” Tyler’s voice was now that of a man in a trance; expressionless.

The rasping and wheezing got louder.

“Winnie-the-Pooh,” Winter said in a tone of soft command.

Tyler came out of the trance gasping for air.

“Can’t breathe,” he said, his voice hoarse with panic. He swung around and lurched out into the hallway. “My heart. Can’t breathe.”

He staggered down the hallway and stumbled toward the kitchen. Winter jumped down to the floor.

“Winter?” Alice whispered from the shadows of the lower bunk.

“It’s okay,” Winter said. “But you have to get up and get dressed. We’re going to leave now.”

A heavy thud sounded from the kitchen. It was followed by an unnatural silence.

“What happened?” Alice asked.

“Stay here,” Winter said. “I’ll go take a look.”

She went to the door. With the penlight in hand she moved cautiously down the hall. Alice climbed out of bed but she did not wait in the bedroom. She followed Winter.

Tyler was sprawled on the kitchen floor. He did not move. His phone was on the floor close to his hand. Panic arced through Winter. She wondered if she had killed the creep.

Alice came up beside her and took her hand, clinging very tightly. She looked at Tyler’s motionless body.

“Is he dead?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” Winter said. “I’ll check.”

She squeezed Alice’s hand and then freed her fingers to cross the kitchen floor. She stopped a short distance away from Tyler and tried to think about what to do next. In the movies and on television people checked the throat of an unconscious person to find out if there was a pulse.

Gingerly she reached down and put two fingers on Tyler’s neck. She thought she detected a faint beat but she couldn’t be certain. He might not be dead yet but it was possible that he was dying. It was also possible that he was simply unconscious and would recover at any moment. Winter knew that neither outcome would be good for Alice or herself.

The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth

A twisty, compelling novel about one woman’s complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in murder…

From the moment Lucy met her husband’s mother, Diana, she was kept at arm’s length. Diana was exquisitely polite, and properly friendly, but Lucy knew that she was not what Diana envisioned. But who could fault Diana? She was a pillar of the community, an advocate for social justice who helped female refugees assimilate to their new country. That was five years ago.

Now, Diana has been found dead, a suicide note near her body. Diana claims that she no longer wanted to live because of a battle with cancer.

The autopsy does find traces of poison and suffocation.

Oh No! I’m back. I am surrounded by inky black nothingness. The air is musty…damp, my nostrils fill with the smell of dank basement. Like in a haunted house, filled with saws and chains and bloody hooks, this is the perfect place for any psycho to hide his tools of the crazy trade. I’m trembling, from the all-encompassing fear, eating at every cell in my body.Where am I? My fingers search out for clues. Beneath me is a thin mattress on a hard surface. My head rests on a concrete-like pillow. My breathing escalates as the panic rises in my chest. I open my mouth to scream, but only a muted croak escapes. Over the thunder of my pounding heart, I hear a booming crack, a gunshot. I recognize the sound from a trip to the range with Jake years earlier.

I swing my legs over the side of my perch, thinking in my blind panic to run even though I cannot see. I can’t ignore this intense urge to flee. But my impulse is thwarted by an unknown restraint trapping my left arm, a rope? Panic has me in its grip. I gasp for air to fill my lungs but produce only whimpers and muted pleas.

A loud screech reverberates through the darkness. Rats? Oh, please, no rats! Could this get any worse? Hysterical, I yank relentlessly on the rope tethering me. With each tug, the line cuts deeper into my skin. My arm warms as blood seeps from the gouges, coating my hand and fingers. Behind me, the pounding sound of footsteps startles me. Before I can turn to confront my visitor, I feel the rush of air preceding the impact to the back of my head. A blaze of bright stars then, a different blackness envelopes me.

Murder, She Wrote: Manuscript for Murder by Jon Land @JonDLand @BerkleyPub #6bookbestiesmurdershewrote #bookreview

TGIF booklovers!

I am so excited to share with you today my review for this book that brought back so many memories: Memories of Sunday night sitting in front of the television, when you actually had to get up and change the channel, tuning into CBS and watching Angela Lansbury on the very charming detective show “Murder, She Wrote”📖🖋

It was tons of fun to revisit Jessica and Cabot Cove! This was a really fun group read with my BOOK BESTIES!💕

Murder, She Wrote: Manuscript for Murder by Jon Land

My Thoughts

This isn’t your grandmother’s Jessica Fletcher!

This was such a fun, cozy, engaging, and nostalgic read… it certainly was fun going back to Cabot Cove! I remember Sunday night watching television, when you still had to change the channels manually, and watching Angela Lansbury on “Murder, She Wrote.” Having never read one of the books before I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I have to say I was extremely pleased! Jessica has definitely had a bit of an update, but don’t stress she still is the same charming, intelligent, and Witty character we all know and love…. she just has a little more savvy and a cell phone, but I guess even Cabot Cove has entered the 21st-century….

This time we have a murder about a book… it appears that anyone who has read this manuscript has been killed… but why? And by whom? After Jessica’s longtime publisher is found dead and has been accused of embezzling, Jessica is determined to prove him innocent…. not only that she is convinced his death was murder and she is going to find the killer! As the bodies begin to pile up Jessica is more and more convinced that these murders have something to do with this manuscript…. The investigation takes Jessica to New York and Washington DC, but don’t worry there’s plenty of time in Cabot Cove with the whole gang! I seriously wonder how many dead bodies Jessica has run across in her life? makes a girl wonder?

I loved the fact we got a book inside a book… I enjoyed reading the manuscript titled “The Affair“ with Jessica…. I relished her analysis of the manuscript…. really the perfect murder mystery for the book lover, there were so many little tidbits about the publishing business… I also have to admit the manuscript contain quite a compelling thriller of its own! What a concept to put a thriller in the middle of a cozy mystery? Throw in some politics, the first lady, the publishing world, eccentric authors and you’ve got yourself quite the delightful and suspenseful murder mystery… it was so much fun putting on my detective hat and once again joining Jessica in trying to figure out, who done it? I am absolutely going to watch some of the old shows sometime this weekend, it Hass to be on one of the many streaming subscriptions that I have!

Absolutely recommend if you are a fan of the show or not, this was a fabulously plotted mystery with some pretty amazing characters!

*** many thanks to Berkley for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

Jessica Fletcher investigates a mysterious manuscript with deadly consequences in the latest entry in this USA Todaybestselling series…

Jessica Fletcher has had plenty to worry about over her storied career, both as a bestselling novelist and amateur sleuth. But she never had any reason to worry about her longtime publisher, Lane Barfield, who also happens to be a trusted friend. When mounting evidence of financial malfeasance leads to an FBI investigation of Lane, Jessica can’t believe what she’s reading.

So when Barfield turns up dead, Jessica takes on the task of proving Barfield’s innocence–she can’t fathom someone she’s known and trusted for so long cheating her. Sure enough, Jessica’s lone wolf investigation turns up several oddities and inconsistencies in Barfield’s murder. Jessica knows something is being covered up, but what exactly? The trail she takes to answer that question reveals something far more nefarious afoot, involving shadowy characters from the heights of power in Washington. At the heart of Jessica’s investigation lies a manuscript Barfield had intended to bring out after all other publishers had turned it down. The problem is that manuscript has disappeared, all traces of its submission and very existence having been wiped off the books.

With her own life now in jeopardy, Jessica refuses to back off and sets her sights on learning the contents of that manuscript and what about it may have led to several murders. Every step she takes brings her closer to the truth of what lies in the pages, as well as the person who penned them.

Happy Monday Book lovers!

Delighted to share with you today my review for this heartwarming and adorable book! Another fantastic read with my BOOK BESTIEs 💕😻

The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa

My Thoughts

A beautifully told, heartwarming story, that will make you never look at your cat the same way again….

Do you ever wonder what your cat is thinking? Especially when he gives you one of those looks, you know the one! In this charming story guaranteed to put a smile on your face you will get the perspective of Nana, The cat and his owner Satoru… there is a sweet innocence to this book that will melt even the hardiest of hearts…. cat person, dog person, it doesn’t matter this is a book perfect for all human people….

Nana is a content stray who is befriended by Satoru…. their relationship is limited to Satoru giving him crunchies, until one day Nana is injured and needs his friend… from there a beautiful relationship blooms between man and cat…. then one day Satoru takes Nana on a road trip, determined to find the perfect New home… but Nana is confused, why must Satoru find him a new home?

The quest for Nana‘s new home takes the two of them on a journey down memory lane… I loved all The people they met along the road trip, I loved all the back stories, and learning about Satoru’s childhood…. but most of all I love Nana’s insight and snarky comments… what a brilliant cat with a quick tongue and a heart of gold… at its very core this book really is about the unconditional love between people and their pets…. it is about the impact we have on other peoples lives however insignificant we might think it is… it is about kindness, heart, hope, and compassion….

This is a refreshing story, unlike anything I have ever read… it will rejuvenate your Faith in all species big and small… A book that will break your heart and then build you back up and fill you with hope!

Absolutely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good story, with well developed characters, that will both inspire you and comfort you…

The Lies We Told by Camilla Way @CamillaLWay @BerkleyPub #6bookbestieslieswetold #6bookbestiesapproved #bookreview

TGIF book friends!

Thrilled to share with you today my review for this twisted juicy psychological thriller! This was a read with my BOOK BESTY’s and as always we had a fabulous discussion! It is always so much fun to try to figure out what is going on?💕💕💕

cover135479-medium.png

The Lies We Told by Camilla Way

My Thoughts

WOWZA! This was psychological thriller PERFECTION!

This book had me riveted from cover to cover… it was one of those books that I flew through and as I got closer to the end I wanted to slow down, because I was not ready to let this book go…. but as much as I wanted this book not to end, I needed to know what all had happened, and what was going to happen next…. because let me tell you what, Camilla Way had me completely stumped!

This book starts out with two seemingly separate storylines, That you know are somehow connected… but how? Clara wakes up to find her boyfriend luke’s phone, but no Luke…. where is he? Did he runaway? Was he kidnapped? Clara knows he was being stalked? But by who? And why? 30 years earlier in 1986, beth a loving stay at home mother is struggling to raise her troubled daughter Hannah… OK troubled might be an understatement Hannah is pretty much a psychopath…. her actions, words, and looks were simply chilling, and her character was portrayed so perfectly and realistically … seriously I had chills running down my back from some of her evil looks!

So how are Clara and Beth’s stories connected? This book had my mind spinning, I had so many theories going on, most of them pretty convoluted… this was a group read with my book Besties and we were all scratching our heads trying to figure this one out… and as Camilla Way began to weave these stories together the fog began to lift and it became crystal clear…. Crystal clear that this was one Hot mess! So many lies leading to so many secrets, and so many secrets leading to so many lies….

This was a fast-paced addictive read that will keep you glued to those pages…. A book that will keep you guessing until the bitter end, if you figure this one out… my hats off to you! Strongly recommend to all psychological thriller lovers, the twists and turns in this one will leave you reeling!

*** A huge thank you to Berkley Pub for my copy of this book ***

When Clara’s boyfriend, Luke, disappears, everyone believes that he’s left her, but Clara thinks she knows the truth. Recent evidence suggests that Luke had a stalker, and Clara worries that he’s been kidnapped. Then Luke’s older sister, Emma, who vanished twenty years ago, suddenly reappears.

Emma wants to help Clara with her search for Luke, but she refuses to talk about what happened–even though it nearly destroyed her family when she vanished. And the deeper Clara digs into Luke’s mysterious disappearance, the more convinced she is that the two incidents are connected.
