Death at The Dakota by MK Graff @GraffMarni @damppebbles #bookreview #deathatthedakota

Happy happy!

I have another review for you all for another great book! Thanks Emma for my invitation to the tour!🎬

Book Blurb:

Nurse Trudy Genova is making plans to take her relationship to NYPD detective Ned O’Malley to the next level, when she lands a gig as medical consultant on a film shoot at the famed Dakota apartment building in Manhattan, which John Lennon once called home. Then star Monica Kiley goes missing, a cast member turns up dead, and it appears Trudy might be next. Meanwhile Ned tackles a mysterious murder case in which the victim is burned beyond recognition. When his investigations lead him back to the Dakota, Trudy finds herself wondering: how can she fall in love if she can’t even survive?

Readers of Death Unscripted, the first book in the Trudy Genova Manhattan Mystery series, will find the same pleasures in this sequel: fast pacing, engaging characters, twists and turns on the way to a satisfying close. From the award-winning author of The Nora Tierney English Mysteries, this second series is a winner. Once again M.K. Graff reveals her talents in crafting this delightful mix of amateur sleuth and police procedural.

My Thoughts

This is the second book in the Trudy Genova Manhattan Mystery series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. This was a cozy mystery with a bit of an edgy vibe. Trudy is a nurse who works on movie sets as a medical advisor. What an interesting job. MK Graff formerly worked as a medical advisor on a soap opera that filmed in NY and I thought that added a lot of authenticity to this book. Trudy was also a smart sassy character who I took to right away. A great deal of this book takes place at the Dakota apartments where John Lennon once lived. I googled this location and there is so much fascinating history even a suggestion of a ghost, I’d recommend googling it, quite fascinating.

In this book somebody is murdered on the movie set that Trudy is working on. Then Trudy‘s boyfriend Ned a NYC police officer is involved in a murder that loops back to the Dakota. Now Trudy’s life is in danger, what is going on? And will the Mystery be solved in time? I enjoyed playing amateur sleuth right alongside Trudy. I loved the setting of the movie set, so many potential suspects. I also felt as though this book had the perfect amount of Trudy’s personal life infused into it including some romance. Simply put this was a perfectly paced well plotted Mystery that kept me engaged throughout.

Death Before Coffee by Desmond P. Ryan @RealDesmondRyan @damppebbles #bookreview #deathbeforecoffee

Happy Saturday, yay it’s the weekend!

Excited to share with you today my review for this compelling book. A huge thank you to Emma for my invitation to the tour!☕️

Book Blurb:

By 2:27 on a Thursday afternoon, the one-legged man from Room 8 at 147 Loxitor Avenue has been beaten to death with a lead pipe. Twenty-eight minutes later, Detective Mike O’Shea is testifying in a stuffy courtroom, unaware that, within an hour, he will be standing in an alleyway littered with beer cans and condoms while his new partner—the man who saved his life thirteen years ago—flicks bugs off of a battered corpse with a ballpoint pen. When a rogue undercover copper prematurely hauls in the prime suspect, Mike blows a fuse, resulting in an unlikely rapport developing between him and the lead homicide detective sergeant, a woman known for her stilettos and razor sharp investigative skills. At the end of his seventy-two-hour shift, three men are dead and Mike O’Shea is floating in and out of consciousness in an emergency room hallway, two women by his side.

Death Before Coffee, the second book in the Mike O’Shea Crime Fiction Series, weaves a homicide investigation through the life of an inner-city police detective intent on balancing his responsibilities as a son, brother, and newly single father with his sworn oath of duty. When faced with death, Mike is forced to make decisions that stir up old memories, compelling him to confront his demons while fighting the good fight.

My Thoughts

This book is like a cup of coffee… dark, strong, and caffeinated. This is the second book in the Michael O’Shea series, and I think I might have missed a little having not read the first book. From what I gather this book takes up 13 years after the previous book and now Mike is no longer working on juvenile cases. This book was very real and raw. Very reminiscent of some of the better police programs on TV such as NYPD Blue or my beloved Law and Order. Also I’m not quite sure I’ve ever seen the murder weapon being a lead pipe other than in the board game Clue. I’m kind of rambling, but I really don’t know if I should say much about the plot, I think it might spoil it?

Mike is an old school detective, a bit grumpy with some strong family ties. I really love his large Irish family, especially mom! The mystery was very intriguing although quite dark. In fact the entire book had a bit of a bleak and gloomy air about it. Although I think this just added to the overall tone of the story, definitely didn’t take anything from it.

An extremely well done crime thriller that will leave you wanting more!

*** Big thanks to the author for my copy of this book ***

About Desmond P. Ryan:

For almost thirty years, Desmond P. Ryan worked as a cop in the back alleys, poorly-lit laneways, and forgotten neighbourhoods in Toronto, the city where he grew up. Murder often most unkind, assaults on a level that defied humanity, and sexual violations intended to demean, shame, and haunt the victims were all in a day’s work. Days, evenings, midnights–all the same. Crime knows no time.

Whether as a beat cop or a plainclothes detective, Desmond dealt with good people who did bad things and bad people who followed their instincts. And now, as a retired detective, he writes crime fiction.

Real Detective. Real Crime. Fiction.

A Bloody Stiletto, Cold Lasagna, and a Bestseller by Cheryl Denise Bannerman @cbannerman @damppebbles #bookreview

Happy Sunday bibliophiles!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the UK or outside, I figure I should celebrate all mothers days! Delighted to share with you today my review for this fun mystery! Many thanks to Emma for my invitation to the tour and to Cheryl Denise Bannerman for her wonderful words!👠

Book Blurb:

In this second installment of The Anna Romano Mystery Series, Anna gets herself into a mess that lands her in hot water with the prime suspect and her new Bo, Detective John Solace. Their new romance was going great, when all in the sudden, a simple trip to the grocery store turned into wrestling match between two scorned women.

Peeking her interest for a juicy story, Anna’s snooping to find out more about the seemingly ‘innocent’ love triangle, catapulted her into the middle of a murder investigation. The murder weapon of choice? A red stiletto…conspicuously pointing the police in the direction of a female assailant.

No one knows whether the adulterating husband killed his wife to avoid a costly divorce, or if his mistress killed her in a fit of jealous rage. While the detectives are convinced the husband is the ‘killer’, it seems Anna’s faith in his innocence may be in vain, as additional bodies, and mistresses, keep piling up.

Meanwhile, Anna’s publicist, Shirlene, tries to convince Anna to leave the detective work to the police, but, as usual, falls on deaf ears.

In the end, not even a pan of lasagna and a neighborly smile could save Anna!

Find out in A Bloody Stiletto, Cold Lasagna, and a Bestseller if Detective Solace will be able to handle Anna’s crazy antics, or if he will make her vow to stay OUT of the realm of ‘Murder and Mayhem’ once and for all.

My Thoughts

This is the second installment in the author Anna Romano series and it was just as fun and entertaining as the first. First of all can I just say I love the titles in the series, this title has three of my favorite things in it: shoes, food, and books! It is a quick easy read the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Anna Romano is a likable protagonist whose main flaw is she’s a bit on the nosy side. BUT it is Anna‘s nosiness that leads to all the fun and chaos in these amusing stories.

Anna is innocently grocery shopping one day when she hears a huge fight between two women in a different aisle. Of course she cannot help but investigate what is going on. Soon there after one of these ladies has been killed with a red stiletto no less. It is thought to be the husband who had caught her cheating, that is until other mistresses start dropping dead. What is going on? Anna is determined to figure it out, much to the chagrin of her beau John who is a detective. There is a lot packed into this little book: great characters, an intriguing mystery, and food! Recommend!

Mama’s Gone (The Lagotti Family Book #4) by Leopold Borstinski #MamasGone #TheLagottiFamily #damppebblesblogtours

Hope you had a fantastic weekend!

Thrilled to share with you today my review for this book that is a little different from my usual reads, but it definitely kept me entertained. Many thanks to Emma for my invitation to this tour!🖤

My Thoughts

This was a dark story about the mob, riddled with violence, sex, and drugs.

This is the fourth book in the series, but I had no problem reading it as a standalone. It was action-packed and kept me entertained throughout, even though this is not my usual reading preference. I do find the mob inner workings fascinating, but I think this book taking place pretty much in my backyard was a bit offputting? I’m just not sure if it rings true that there is any kind of mob like this in Los Angeles especially in the 90s, just saying. But it is fiction after all!

Mary Lou has been running the “family business“ since the 60s, but lately she’s become a little forgetful. Her second husband Bobby and daughter Alice are trying to scheme a way to have her hand over the business, meanwhile they are covering for her. Alice and Bobby are also trying to get Mary Lou’s son Frank involved, but he is more interested in womanizing and drugging. None of the characters in this book were terribly likable, but I guess that’s The nature of the beast. Although I do have to admit I liked Alice she was smart and seem to have a good head on her shoulders, and perhaps will take the family business in a positive way? Like any mob book there was quite a bit of violence and sex in the book, if this were a movie it would definitely be rated R.

I think this book will definitely appeal to fans of mob literature (if that’s a thing?) It was dark and gritty and raw! Not for the faint of heart, for sure!

*** many thanks too Damppebbles for my copy of this book ***

Godlefe’s Cuckoo (Danny Lancaster #6) by Bill Todd #GodlefesCuckoo @williamjtodd @damppebbles #damppebblesblogtours

Happy Thursday book friends! Finished up all my Christmas shopping yesterday, now I just need to get those gifts wrapped!🎁

This is my final blog tour of 2018! Thank you so much Emma for the invitation! Looking forward to many more in 2019!💚❄️

GODLEFES CUCKOO Front Final - LDanny Lancaster has been missing since the fishing boat exploded. Police are closing their inquiry but Wanda Lovejoy continues her campaign to find the truth. An evil man kept alive by machines nurses a corrosive hate. As drugs and disease pull his dying mind apart he throws his crime empire into a scorched earth quest to find one man. If Danny Lancaster isn’t dead he soon will be.

My Thoughts

A complicated tale of intrigue and suspense!

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked this book up, but I have to admit I was quite surprised! This was a compelling story that kept me up late into the night flipping those pages! This is the fifth book in the series.. however it can absolutely be read as a standalone, but as in all series you are missing out on some character development… also at the beginning of this book Danny Lancaster the main character of the series is missing and presumed dead…

This book was chock-full of a lot of characters that kept you on your toes… so many characters, but all pretty well developed, it did add to the complexity but that just requires a little more focus…. I have to admit though Wanda Lovejoy (love that last name) was my favorite, loved her! The story really had a bit of everything international intrigue, mobsters, suspense, and of course a little kidnapping!

This book made me realize that I cannot judge a book by its title! No offense, but that title just did not draw me in as much as others have … but that’s a me thing!

** recommended **

The Good, The Bad & The Rugby by Mark Farrer @mark_farrer @damppebbles #TheGoodTheBadTheRugby #bookreview #giveaway

Happy Wednesday!

Excited to share with you today my review for this good old-fashioned fun crime thriller that doesn’t take its self too seriously! Thank you so much Emma for the invitation to the tour!😊

GBR-Front-CoverGetting to the truth. By trial… and eror error.

Cullen is on jury duty, and the sleepy Scottish town of Melrose is experiencing a rare crime wave: the famous Rugby Sevens trophy is stolen, a dead body is unearthed, there is a spate of petty arson, and someone drives a van into Gloria’s front room.
Why? And what is her husband doing every night up on Eildon hill?

In this hilarious crime romp, misguided loyalties, thwarted love, and unbelievable gullibility reach crisis point on the one day in the year when the world pays a visit to Melrose.

At the final whistle, Cullen will ensure that justice is done.

Because sometimes twelve good men just isn’t enough.

My Thoughts

This was a fun and humerus crime thriller….

This is one of those books you don’t want to read in public, unless you want to get those funny looks when you’re laughing out loud at apparently nothing… an over-the-top character driven story about some quite interesting characters… i’m not even sure how to review this… it’s like when you tell a joke you heard on a late night television show and it falls flat, Because you cannot deliver it quite the same way?

A cleverly crafted story about rugby, a jury trial, and a lot of crazy antics… i’m currently chuckling to myself just thinking about some of the shenanigans that went on in this book! It really was just plain good old fashion fun! A book that did not take itself too seriously that Will leave you with a smile on your face and tears running down your cheeks from laughing so hard!😂

Recommend when you’re in the mood for a fun book filled with laughter and Fabulous characters!

Cats, Cannolis and a Curious Kidnapping by Cheryl Denise Bannerman #AnnaRomanoMysteries @cbannerman01 @damppebbles #BookReview #Giveaway

Happy Wednesday all! Off to a later start than usual today, I had a killer headache last night that is still lingering, but.,.. life is tough, so get tougher!

Thrilled to be part of the blog tour today for this fun book! Many thanks to Emma for my invitation! 😻

Cats, Cannolis...cover

Cats, Cannolis and a Curious Kidnapping” is the first novel in the Anna Romano Mystery Series. It is a funny, whimsical, murder mystery series that appeals to ‘mystery readers’ of all ages.

Anna Romano is a middle-aged, Italian woman who is also a successful published author, a lover of cats, and an excellent cook with a hankering for Italian cuisine. She lives by herself in her quaint house, in a quiet community, with a white picket fence in Central New Jersey.

When she is not writing her next book or hosting book-signing events with her publicist, she is cleaning litter boxes and baking Cannolis…but never at the same time, of course!

In this first installment, on a typical day in Anna’s somewhat-perfect life, a book-signing event turns her world upside down. Is it a case of mistaken identity or was she just being paranoid?

My Thoughts

Cats! Cannolis! Kidnapping!

This was a short fun packed read…. and just as the title implies it was filled with cats, Italian cuisine, and ultimately a kidnapping…. this is the first book in what looks like is going to be a wonderful new series!

Anna is a middle-aged author living in New Jersey with her seven cats… as a cat person myself I appreciated the part the cats played in this book they all had their own unique names and personalities…. someone is following Anna, and Anna is smart enough to call the police about this ( unlike lots of other Book characters in the same situation)…. and it’s a good thing she did, not only were they ultimately helpful, but there is now the possibility of romance in the next book!

This is a short book that you can read in a single sitting… books of this length have some drawbacks though…. it’s hard to have well developed characters and a well developed mystery in so few pages…. I think Anna was introduced to us well, and seeings though this is a series we will just get to know her better in future books…. The mystery did feel a bit rushed at the end, it was tied up a bit too neatly for me…

All in all a good start to a new series, recommend to cat lovers, food lovers, and people who enjoy quick easy reads!

Crack Apple & Pop by Saira Viola #crackappleandpop @sairaviola @F13Noir @fahrenheitpress @damppebbles #damppebblesblogtours #BookReview

Happy Tuesday book lovers!

Delighted to share with you today my review for this unique story! Many thanks to Emma for my invitation to the blog tour!💛

crack apple and pop

Tony is a handsome young boxer forced into a life of crime after suffering a vicious blow in the ring.

Seduced by the glitz and glamour of London and mentored by charismatic gang lord Don March he rises rapidly up the crime ladder until he spies an opportunity to start a semi-legit Natural Highs business.

Bankrolled by an eccentric British dandy and accompanied by a cast of starry misfits including a 3ft tall blue-haired money man, an Etonian drug mule, two dominatrix debt collectors, a dodgy lawyer and a host of demi-celebs, Tony carves out a roll for himself in a city where money creates its’ own morality.

All seems to be going well until in the shadows, a Bollywood mobster threatens to derail their plans.

Chaos ensues, of course it does – wonderful, beautiful, visceral chaos.

The deft wit of Hammett meets the vivid poetics of Chandler: Crack Apple and Pop is slick smart and razor sharp. A gritty and sometimes metafictive slice of London noir.

A city of artful dodgers, yardie gangsters, kinky aristos, cocaine dusted starlets and social thrill seekers where everyone’s hustling and everyone’s getting high.

Whether it’s law, finance, the music biz, or the boxing ring: money is king. And only the ones prepared to risk everything will survive…

My Thoughts

This was a unique look at greed and depravity… The writing style was very unusual, told in a somewhat lyrical fashion with many cultural pop references…. because I am a huge fan of pop culture this aspect of the book was definitely a lot of fun! Admittedly it took me a while to get into the rhythm of the story, but once I did I really enjoyed it….

You’ll watch Tony almost reach his dreams and then come crashing down…. where he falls is the gritty side of life, but a man needs to survive… this book took a satirical look at life on both sides of the aisle… and both sides of the tracks… I liked this because the book really had no agenda, but to make you see everything through different eyes…

Recommend for those of you who enjoy a book with an unusual delivery and mind opening content…

Needle Song by Russell Day @rfdaze @fahrenheitpress @damppebbles #BookReview

TGIF!

Thrilled to be part of the blog tour for this very unique crime thriller that I strongly encourage you to give a go!

Many thanks to Emma for my invitation and to Russell Day for his brilliant words🙃🙂

Book Blurb:
Spending the night with a beautiful woman would be a good alibi, if the body in the next room wasn’t her husband.

Doc Slidesmith has a habit of knowing things he shouldn’t. He knows the woman Chris Rudjer meets online is married. He knows the adult fun she’s looking for is likely to be short lived. And when her husband’s killed, he knows Chris Rudjer didn’t do it.

Only trouble is the police disagree and no one wants to waste time investigating an open and shut case.

No one except Doc.

Using lies, blackmail and a loaded pack of Tarot cards, Doc sets about looking for the truth – but the more truth he finds, the less he thinks his friend is going to like it.

My Thoughts

4 Unconventional Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Tattoos and voodoo and tarot cards… oh my! This was a crime thriller with a different vibe and I’d venture to guess you’ve never read anything quite like this before… and I mean that in the best possible way….Russell Day Took the traditional crime thriller and turned it on its head… creating an unconventional… unique… unputdownable story….

Told from the point of view of Yakky apprentice tattoo artist to Doc… the main character….Doc is an amateur detective who uses psychology, tarot cards, and instinct to solve crimes… he is also a huge fan of Miss Marple…. and there was a bit of an Agatha Christie vibe to the story with a huge twist….

The mystery in this book was well plotted and paced… but what captivated me most about this book was the characters… Doc and Yakky in particular… I found both of them extremely interesting and the Dynamics between the two of them even more interesting…. curious to see where the next book in this series takes us???

Absolutely recommend when you are in the mood for an unique crime thriller with some fabulous characters…

*** many thanks to the publisher for my copy of this book ***

About Russell Day:

Russell Day was born in 1966 and grew up in Harlesden, NW10 – a geographic region searching for an alibi. From an early age it was clear the only things he cared about were motorcycles, tattoos and writing. At a later stage he added family life to his list of interests and now lives with his wife and two children. He’s still in London, but has moved south of the river for the milder climate.

Although he only writes crime fiction Russ doesn’t consider his work restricted. ‘As long as there have been people there has been crime, as long as there are people there will be crime.’ That attitude leaves a lot of scope for settings and characters. One of the first short stories he had published, The Second Rat and the Automatic Nun, was a double-cross story set in a world where the church had taken over policing. In his first novel, Needle Song, an amateur detective employs logic, psychology and a loaded pack of tarot cards to investigate a death.

Russ often tells people he seldom smiles due to nerve damage, sustained when his jaw was broken. In fact, this is a total fabrication and his family will tell you he’s has always been a miserable bastard.

The TV Detective by Simon Hall #BlogBlitz #BookReview #TheTVDetective @damppebbles @SimonHallNews @fahrenheitpress

Happy Hump Day All! Super excited to be part of the blog blitz for this series with a fresh approach to the police procedural🚨

Thank you so much to Emma for the invitation and to Simon hall for his fantastic book!🚔

The TV Detective cover

The TV Detective by Simon Hall

Book Blurb:

Dan Groves is a television reporter newly assigned to the crime beat and not at all happy about it.

Dan knows next nothing about police work or how to report on it so when he persuades Detective Chief Inspector Adam Breen to allow him to shadow a high-profile murder inquiry it seems like the perfect solution though it soon becomes clear some members of the police force have no intention of playing nice with the new boy.

With his first case Dan is dropped in at the deep-end. A man is killed in a lay-by with a blast through the heart from a shotgun. The victim is a notorious local businessman, Edward Bray, a man with so many enemies there are almost too many suspects for the police to eliminate.

As tensions rise between Dan and the police he comes close to being thrown off the case until the detectives realize that far from being a liability, Dan might actually be the key to tempting the murderer into a trap.

The TV Detective is the first book in a classic crime series from Simon Hall, who until recently was the BBC Crime Correspondent for the Devon and Cornwall area.

~My Review~

4 Lights Camera Action Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

And entertaining start to this series… Author Simon Hall is an ex TV reporter for the BBC, so I really appreciated the fact that his main character Dan is a TV reporter…. added some credibility to everything for me….

Dan is a television reporter who gets moved (not sure if this was promoted or demoted) to the crime beat…. his first time out is to a murder investigation… when Dan arrives he realizes he is a little late to the party… so he decides his best bet is to shadow detective Adam Breen…. The relationship between Dan and Adam was absolutely my favorite part of this book… enjoyed the friendship and the back-and-forth between these two…

Dan comes up with a plan to use the TV media to trap the killer… they go along with his plan, but will it work? The BBC must be much more involved with their cases then American TV reporters… because these TV reporters I watch on the morning news are not out hunting killers (thankfully)…. I found this a fresh approach to the police procedural…

Recommend two fans of the police procedural, a good start to this series!

Simon HallAbout Simon Hall:

Simon Hall is an author and journalist.

He has been a broadcaster for twenty five years, mostly as a BBC Television and Radio News Correspondent, covering some of the biggest stories Britain has seen.

His books – the tvdetective series – are about a television reporter who covers crimes and gets so involved in the cases he helps the police to solve them. Seven have been published.

Simon has also contributed articles and short stories to a range of newspapers and magazines, written plays, and even a pantomime.

Alongside his novels and stories, Simon is a tutor in media skills and creative writing, teaching at popular Writers’ Summer Schools such as Swanwick and Winchester, on cruise ships and overseas.

Simon has also become sought after as a speaker, appearing at a variety of prestigious literary festivals. His talks combine an insight into his writing work, along with some extraordinary anecdotes from the life of a television reporter, including the now notorious story of What to do when you really need a dead otter.

Now 49 years old, he began a broadcasting career as a DJ on the radio and in nightclubs, then moved into radio and TV news. He worked in Europe, London, Ireland, and the south west of England, before settling in Cambridge.

Simon is married to Jess, Director of Libraries at the University of Cambridge, and has an adopted daughter, Niamh. She’s an army officer, which makes her father both very proud and very nervous.

Simon lectures on careers in the media at Cambridge University, and in schools and colleges. Amongst his proudest achievements, he includes the number of young people he has helped into jobs in broadcasting, and aspiring writers into publication.

As for his likes, Simon lists beer – he judges at real ale festivals – cycling the countryside, solving cryptic crosswords, composing curious Tweets (find him @thetvdetective ) and studying pop lyrics.
