I Invited Her In by Adele Parks @HarlequinBooks #bookreview #audiobook #iinvitedherin

Happy Sunday all!

Excited to share with you my audiobook review for this dark domestic drama about one woman’s need to manipulate and destroy!💜

  • I Invited Her In

  • By: Adele Parks
  • Narrated by: Joanne Froggatt
  • Length: 14 hrs and 30 mins
  • Unabridged Audiobook
  • Release date: 02-05-19
  • Language: English
  • Publisher: Harlequin Audio

My Thoughts

A dark domestic thriller packed with madness and manipulation!

I invited her in… and she took everything…

This was a brilliantly crafted character study! Adele Parks has skillfully constructed A story about the ultimate betrayal. This is not a story full of twists and turns nor is it supposed to be. It is a story about master manipulation and the motivations behind it. A Book about one woman’s rage and need for revenge and the destruction she leaves in her wake.

Melanie and Abi were the best of friends at University, but when Melanie becomes unexpectedly pregnant and leaves university they slowly drift apart. they both lead very different lives. Melanie is now the mother of three and married to a loving man Ben. Abi has moved to the US and become a celebrity, leading a life of fame and glamour. When Melanie receives an email out of the blue from Abi informing her that she’s coming home. Melanie does not hesitate to invite her to stay at her home. At first Melanie is so excited to have her old BFF back in her life, but soon she discovers Abi’s malicious intent.

Wow Abi was one twisted manipulative angry bitch! Seriously there is no other word to describe her, she was crazy evil! Poor Melanie was left trying to figure out why she was doing this to her and picking up the pieces of her life at the same time. There are a few twists and reveals that I suspected, but that’s not what kept me turning the pages. I had to see what Abi would get up to next, how far was she willing to go? Her fury seem to have no boundaries.

A dark drama about revenge, betrayal , and manipulation! Recommend!

🎧🎧🎧 Joanne Froggatt brilliantly narrates this story! She gives Melanie and Abi their own unique voices. Her Abi Voice was pure perfection, I think she made the character even more witchy, I seriously wanted to smack her many times throughout this book!

🎵🎵🎵Song Running Through My Head

You made a fool of me
But them broken dreams have got to end
Hey, woman, you got the blues
‘Cause you ain’t got no one else to use
There’s an open road that leads nowhere,
So just make some miles between here and there
There’s a hole in my head where the rain comes in
You took my body and played to win
Ha, ha, woman, it’s a cryin’ shame
But you ain’t got nobody else to blame.
Evil woman, evil woman, evil woman,
Evil woman.
Rolled in from another town
Hit some gold, too hot to settle down
But a fool and his money soon go separate ways
And you found a fool lyin’ in a daze
Ha, ha, woman, what you gonna do?
You destroyed all the virtues that the Lord gave you
It’s so good that you’re feelin’ pain
But you better get your face on board the very next train.
Evil…

Mercy

Mercy by Debra Anastasia

⭐⭐⭐⭐·5 Skulltastic stars

Synopsis

He taught me to kill. Murder is in my blood now. It runs through my veins and though I hide the monster I see in the mirror with ink, it doesn’t keep him from coming out.

My street name is Mercy, but I never show any. Except for her. I watch Becca, though she doesn’t know. She saved me a long time ago; the day my father killed my mother. Her bravery turned her into a target.

My father holds a grudge and knife with the same proficiency, and Becca is the focus of his hatred. And I’m the only monster who can save her.

Review

Ho-hum another book another tattooed guy what’s a girl to do!!

Fenix ‘Nix’ for short is a troubled boy, he has had a really bad upbringing by a really nasty father.

Beaten and mentally tortured by his father, Nix is waiting for the day he is old enough to leave.

On a random shopping spree his father goes into his usual threats, this day however he is spotted by someone who comes over to help unfortunately it is only a little girl named Rebecca.

She stands up for him when no one else ever has and Nix never forgets her.

Becca now waits tables at a local bar and Nix has turned into a cold hard killer, to stop him from looking like his father he is tattooed with a skeleton from head to foot.

Nix never forgot Becca and knows where she works, in fact he knows where she lives, who her friends are, and spends his time making sure that she’s safe, Becca doesn’t know this obviously and goes about her days in complete ignorance.

A chance for Nix to meet Becca arrives when the bar has a Day of the Dead themed party, everyone has their face painted so Nix just blends right in.

I loved the way this book developed and I love the relationship between Nix and Animal he was such a brilliant friend I hope that there is a book for him soon.

🎧🎧 Narrated by two of my favourite people Muffy Newtown and Zachary Webber.

These two take the book to a whole new level, Muffy’s man voice will make you swoon and Zachary voice as usual is off the chart hot 🔥🔥

This Little Piggy by Rob Ashman @RobAshmanAuthor @Bloodhoundbook #BookReview

Happy hump day all! Welcome to my stop on the blog blitz for this intense crime thriller! Many thanks to Sarah for my invitation and to Rob Ashman for his twisted story!🖤

unnamedThis Little Piggy

Kevin Palmer is a regular sort of guy, or he was until his life fell apart. His wife, his money, his business and his reputation are all taken away from him. He tries to fight back and ends up in prison.

There he concocts elaborate fantasies to wreak vengeance. He is sent to work in an abattoir and the final piece of the jigsaw falls into place with chilling consequences. Then a cruel twist of fate changes everything.

DI Rosalind Kray is battling her own demons having returned to work following a brutal attack. She finds herself on the trail of a sick and twisted killer and cracks the macabre pattern of murders. But her boss is unconvinced.

Kray has Palmer squarely in her sights. But he has other ideas …

Can Kray break him in time to save the final victim?

Time is running out.

My Thoughts

4.5 This Little Piggy Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

… and this little piggy cried wee wee wee all the way home!

A serial killer obsessed with vengeance and a nursery rhyme… a damaged detective consumed with justice… a perfect recipe for a wonderfully dark crime thriller….

This was one dark and twisted book! Told from the point of view of both Rosalind the detective and Kevin the killer…. Rosalind is damaged having just survived a brutal stabbing and the loss of her husband… Kevin has lost everything his wife, his business, his pride, and now he is set on revenge…. oh what a crazy twisted ride he took us on! Murders mimicking the popular nursery rhyme…. down to the eating of the roastbeef, and the collecting of the toes…. this book is definitely not for the faint of heart, there is a splash of gore throughout…. The way the victims are murdered emulates the slaughtering of a pig… not a pretty sight….

Really loved the investigation in this book, and the twists and turns it took…. I really thought for a hot minute were heading in an entirely different direction…. I also always love being in the mind of the killer… and Kevin was exceptionally twisted, and yet sympathetic…. The only very minor complaint I have about the book is I would have liked to have established a better connection with Rosalind… but perhaps in a future book? Can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next….

Strongly recommend to fans of a dark crime thriller with an exceptionally manipulative serial killer…

Author Bio:

Rob is married to Karen with two grown up daughters. He is originally from South Wales and after moving around with work settled in North Lincolnshire where he’s spent the last twenty-two years.

Like all good welsh valley boys Rob worked for the National Coal Board after leaving school at sixteen and went to University at the tender age of twenty-three when the pit closures began to bite. Since then he’s worked in a variety of manufacturing and consulting roles both in the UK and abroad.

It took Rob twenty-four years to write his first book. He only became serious about writing it when his dad got cancer. It was an aggressive illness and Rob gave up work for three months to look after him and his mum. Writing Those That Remain became his coping mechanism. After he wrote the book his family encouraged him to continue, so not being one for half measures, Rob got himself made redundant, went self-employed so he could devote more time to writing and four years later the Mechanic Trilogy is the result.

When he is not writing, Rob is a frustrated chef with a liking for beer and prosecco, and is known for occasional outbreaks of dancing.

Rob published the Mechanic Trilogy with Bloodhound Books in 2017 and will be releasing three new books during 2018. These are titled: Faceless, This Little Piggy and Suspended Retribution.

4.5 Disturbing Stars🌟 You Were Made for This by Michelle Sacks #BookReview #PubDay @littlebrown

Happy Publication Day! Thrilled to share my review of this darkly disturbing yet wonderful book!🎉💗🎉

You Were Made For This

You Were Made for This by Michelle Sacks

4.5 Darkly Disturbing Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

Synopsis

Doting wife, devoted husband, cherished child. Merry, Sam, and Conor are the perfect family in the perfect place. Merry adores the domestic life: baking, gardening, caring for her infant son. Sam, formerly an academic, is pursuing a new career as a filmmaker. Sometimes they can hardly believe how lucky they are. What perfect new lives they’ve built.

When Merry’s childhood friend Frank visits their Swedish paradise, she immediately becomes part of the family. She bonds with Conor. And with Sam. She befriends the neighbors, and even finds herself embracing the domesticity she’s always seemed to scorn.

All their lives, Frank and Merry have been more like sisters than best friends. And that’s why Frank soon sees the things others might miss. Treacherous things, which are almost impossible to believe when looking at this perfect family. But Frank, of all people, knows that the truth is rarely what you want the world to see.

My Thoughts

4.5 Dark and Disturbing Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

from the blurb… a dark look at marriage, motherhood,And friendship… don’t always agree with the blurb, but this one is spot on! Michelle Sacks did a fabulous job of painting a disturbing picture…. this book will make you look twice at the closest people in your life…

Sam and Mary have moved to Sweden from New York, and appear to be loving a quieter lifestyle… Mary is the picture of domesticity… baking, cooking, gardening, cleaning, and taking care of her adorable infant son Connor… Sam is taking on A new career and seems more than pleased to have Mary at home playing the loving wife…

This book was told from three different points of view… Mary, Sam, and Mary’s longtime friend Frank who comes for a visit… wow! Looking back my first impressions of these characters sure did change by the end… don’t want to say too much, but none of these characters were terribly likeable…. and a lot of their actions were down right despicable….. One minute I’d be feeling sympathy for a character and then they’d do something and all sympathy went out the window…. and the friendship between Mary and Frank? With friends like that who needs enemies? This book left me feeling as though I needed to take a shower (and not a cold shower)…

This book made you realize things are never quite as they seem…. you only know somebody as well as they allow you to know them…. and everybody has some kind of secret…. A very well done dark and disturbing thriller filled with plenty of characters to dislike!*Warning* some of the content in this book might be a little hard for a more sensitive reader….

Absolutely recommend to fans of a strong psychological/domestic thriller with a darker side….

Flashback Friday Featuring – The Troop by Nick Cutter #FlashbackFriday #BookReview #Disturbed

The Troop

The Troop by Nick Cutter

⭐⭐⭐⭐ If Stephen King said so stars!

Synopsis

Once a year, scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a three-day camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story and a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—stumbles upon their campsite, Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bio-engineered nightmare. An inexplicable horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival that will pit the troop against the elements, the infected…and one another.

Review

What can I say about this book??

I love horror books, I was a mahoosive Stephen King fan when I was younger, and literally hoovered up anything he wrote, also James Herbert and Dean Koontz, so I have read my fair share of yeuch throughout the years. ……..oh but this book!!!

Stephen King reviewed this on GR and said that it scared the shit out of him, that means you have to read it right??

I can safely say that this is the only book that has EVER made me gag!

I was listening to it on audio and I had to take my earphones out as I thought I was going to hurl lol.

On an island just off of Canada a scout troop go to spend a weekend there, as they do every year, with no technology or phones allowed, they go to have a great time.

Apart from this time, this time a man shows up out of nowhere, he is desperately hungry, and I mean HUNGRY, to the point that he starts eating the chair!!

Scout Master Tim helps him inside the cabin they stay in as he knows a bit of first aid and he can clearly see that the man is ill, but he doesn’t know how ill ……..until he sees something moving in the man’s stomach!

A stomach churning – 4☆ read

Read with caution,

Vicci

Blood Runs Cold by Dylan Young #BlogBlitz #BookReview @dyoungwrites @bookouture

How is it already Thursday? Today I am thrilled to be part of the blog blitz for this intriguingly dark police procedural… i’d like to thank Noelle for the invite and Dylan young for his wonderful words📚🖤

Blood-Runs-Cold-Kindle

Title: BLOOD RUNS COLD

Author:  Dylan Young

Description:

She had stopped crying. There was no window, the walls were smooth and it was quiet. She didn’t want to be alone. But she didn’t want him to come back.

On a bright spring morning, walkers find a tattered plastic bag half-buried in the rolling hills of Somerset. Inside lie a collection of bones; human, but too thin and light to be an adult’s.

The bones belong to Rosie Dawson, a little girl who disappeared ten years ago. Detective Anna Gwynne is back at work after a case that nearly cost her her life. The trail is stone cold, but Anna will stop at nothing to find the killer, and escape thoughts of her own dark past.

Then another little girl is abducted near a river bank on the hottest day of the year, and her sister can’t remember anything about the man who took her. Nobody thinks the cases are connected, but then Anna finds a photo of her that matches an old one of Rosie. In the same dark room. The same concrete walls. The same stony floor.

The killer is bragging.

With just two photos and a witness too young to help, can Anna find the killer in time to save a little girl’s life?

A heart-pounding thriller that will get right under your skin. If you love Karin Slaughter, Robert Dugoni and Angela Marsons you’ll love this killer crime thriller.

~My Review~

4 Cold Blooded Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Full disclosure I did not read the first book in this series, so I might have missed some character development when it comes to Anna…. this is a police procedural and the second book in the Anna Gwynne series….

I liked Anna as a character, but I wanted to know her better… in fact really the main complaint I had with the book is I felt a bit of disconnect with Anna and all the secondary characters…. I would have liked to see them fleshed out better and perhaps they were in the first book or will be in future books… there were a couple relationships I found quite intriguing…. the first is Anna and Hector Shaw a convicted serial killer… shades of “Silence of the Lambs…” and it looks as though Hector will be an important part of the next book… i’m also hoping to see more of Dr. Hawly … suspect turned consultant turned possible love interest?

A girl is abducted in Scotland at the same time bones are discovered from a 10-year-old local abduction…. then pictures are found on the dark web of both girls in the same room… how are these cases connected? And will they find Blair alive? Plenty of twists and turns, and an ending I did not see coming….

Recommend two fans of police procedurals with some intriguing relationships…

Folsom by Tarryn Fisher and Willow Aster #ExcerptReveal @WillowAster @DarkMarkTarryn #ComingSoon

We are so excited to share an excerpt and teaser for Folsom by writing duo Tarryn Fisher and Willow Aster coming on May 29th!

Excerpt from FOLSOM:

I stop dead in my tracks. There’s someone else in here. At first I see only boots, large boots, too big for a woman. He hears me come in and perches forward on the sink to peer around the corner.

“You can’t read or you don’t care?” he asks.

At first I’m too shocked to know what he’s talking about, then I remember the Out of Order sign on the door.

“I can’t read,” I say. “I’m just another stupid woman trying to have a baby.”

He laughs. It bounces across the bathroom walls and hits me in the chest.

“Well, at least you have a sense of humor, stupid woman.”

I’m witnessing the very serious and stern Folsom Donahue laughing. I stand there staring at him, not knowing what to do.

And then I ask. “Are you hiding, too?”

“In plain sight,” he says. “Who are you hiding from?”

“Everyone.”

“How’s that working out for you?”

I eye his casual stance, the large hands resting behind him on the sink, the crossed ankles. “Not well, since you’re here.”

He laughs again, this time just a slow rumble while he watches my face.

“I have to go,” he says, pushing away from the counter. He walks toward me and my heart races. I’ve never been this close to a man. He’s just trying to get to the door, I tell myself. But, then he stops so he’s towering over me. I have to bend my head back to see his face.

“Have a good night,” he says. And I learn for the first time what a smirk is. Full lips … teasing … I blink at him, my lips parting to answer, but then he’s gone and I’m not even sure it really happened.

The New Neighbors by Simon Lelic – @Simon_Lelic #bookreview

4.5 Dark and Twisted Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

What happens when you move into your dream home and things start going sideways and bump in the night? Full review below of this dark and twisted story… when things seem too good to be true, they usually are!

~ coming to a bookstore near you March 3 in the US ~

The New Neighbors

The New Neighbors by Simon Lelic

Synopsis

What if your perfect home turned out to be the scene of the perfect crime?

Londoners Jack and Syd moved into the house a year ago. It seemed like their dream home: tons of space, the perfect location, and a friendly owner who wanted a young couple to have it.

So when they made a grisly discovery in the attic, Jack and Syd chose to ignore it. That was a mistake.

Because someone has just been murdered. Right outside their back door.

And now the police are watching them…

Review

4.5 Dark and Twisted Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

This book was originally titled “The House“ I believe this is actually a more apt title…… this book is about Jack and Sid finding their dream house… a house really out of their price range…. yet unbelievably they get it….. at first they feel lucky although Jack is never quite sold on the house…. The house is also filled with all the possessions and furnishings of the previous owner… who moved to Australia and left his belongings behind…. at first they were having fun going through the former owner’s belongings…. having fun playing the vinyl records, but then they encounter a strange smell…. and then things go sideways and bump in the night…..

The beginning of this book is told very cleverly… Jack and Sid are co-authoring a manuscript to give to the police….. explaining all the events leading up to the discovery of a murdered neighbor in the alley behind their house…. I thought this was very effective you got a glimpse into both Sid and Jack’s perspectives…. it was almost as though you were reading their journal or they were talking directly to you….. I found both Sid and Jack’s characters quite interesting although I was always a little more sure that Jack was being honest…. Sid was a little bit more of a mystery…

Don’t want to go too much into the plot just know it is full of twists and turns and quite dark…. there is also abuse, so if this is something that puts you off a book I would not recommend….

Something I found interesting is in the beginning I was thinking… is this a ghost story? Did I misread the blurb, I had read it many months ago…. then I read the authors notes at the end of the book and this book did in fact start off as a ghost story but then it took a turn…. I‘d classify this as a domestic thriller with a dab of psychological thriller thrown in…. so if you are a fan of either of these genres I would strongly recommend…..
